CINE PHOTOGRAPH CLUB

The Otago Cine Photograph Club presented to its members and friends an enjoyable exhibition of motion pictures in the Returned Soldiers’ Association Rooms on Tuesday evening. The attendance was very gratifying, some 350 people being present In the 8 m.m. section, three of the prize-winning films for the 1938 Competition were screened. These were Mr G. S. Currie’s “ The Spirit of Xmas," Miss Phyllis Scott’s “ Where Grandeur Reigns Supreme," and Dr Walden Ftzgerald’s "Royal Albatross Chick at Otago Heads.” During a five-minute interval the president (Dr A. J. Cottrell) spoke on the aims and objects of the club, and extended an invitation to those interested in moving picture work to join. Lectures, screenings, and instructional help was given to members, and, judging by the films shown, all would agree that good results had been obtained. Mr C. E. Begg’s 16 m.m. travel film in black and white and in colour was then screened. The trip commenced in New York, and crossed the border to Canada, showing scenes on the Canadian Pacific Railway, Ottawa, Quebec, Montreal and the St. Lawrence River. The film also showed English and Scottish scenes, which included the Highland, Lake districts, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen. From Southampton a trip on the R.M.S. Queen Mary to New York, thence to Chicago, was shown. A trip through the Rockies to Vancouver followed. Leaving Vancouver by the Union Steam Ship Company's Niagara, Honolulu, Suva, and Fiji were visited, and the picture concluded with scenes of the Waitemata Harbour and of Auckland city. Throughout .the whole length of the film the exposure, unusual camera angles, colour work, especially through the Rockies, left nothing to be desired. The commentator was Mr C. E. Begg, and music and sound effects were by Mr R. W. Cook. The projectionists were Mr R. Riggs and Mr Wallace Smith.
