THE UNEMPLOYED
DECREASE IN BRITAIN MARKED FALL LAST MONTH (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, June 5. (Received June 6, at 6.30 p.m.) There was. a further marked fall in the number of unemployed last month. The Ministry- of Labour estimates that the number of insured persons in employment in Great Britain on May 15 was approximately 12,667,000. This was 156,000 more than a month earlier and on a comparable basis about 440,000 more than a year earlier. At the same date the registered unemployed tfltalled 1,492,282, comprising 1,234,001 wholly unemployed, 198,617 temporarily laid off, and 59,664 normally in casual employment, and including 1,108,943 men, 36,335 boys, 304,813 women and 42,241 girls. The total was 152,112 fewer than a month earlier and 286,523 fewer than a year earlier. The improvement in unemployed which these figures reflect took place in nearly every industry, but was most marked in the building and distribu« tive trades and engineering.
