MR J. M. SMITH TRANSFERRED RECORD OF SERVICE IN OTAGO Mr J. M. Smith, who has filled the position of fields superintendent in the Department of Agriculture for Otago and Southland for five years, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to the Auckland pro-' vincial district. Mr Smith, who is a graduate of Hawkesbury Agricultural College,
was appointed to the south in 1934. He was largely instrumental in resuscitating the farmers' field competitions in Otago and responsible for the strong position they are in today. He has always been a stalwart nf the young fanners' clubs, and as vice-chairman of the Dunedin Committee has done yeoman service in seeing this movement consolidated in the south. He was a foundation member of the agricultural section of the Royal Society in Otago, of which he is immediate past-presi-dent and now honorary secretary. He is also a commissioner of the Taieri River Trust and an honorary member of the Otago Provincial Council of the Farmers' Union. Mr Smith's successor will be Mr J. W. Woodcock, of Wellington, who for the past five years has been in charge of the department's experimental work. Prior to that, he was a fields division extension officer, in the Waikato. >.
