UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The meeting of the council of the University of Otago yesterday was attended by the chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell). Miss M. W. May. Sir James Allen. Dr R. J. T. Bell. Dr James Fitzgerald. Dr F. S. Batchelor. Messrs F. W. Mitchell. J. Robertson. J. Wallace. L. Deans Ritchie. W. R. Brugh and H. P. Kidson. Concessions for Refugee The Professorial Board forwarded a letter from Mr G. F. Hall, corresponding member of the New Zealand University Students' Association, stating that the Students' Association was endeavouring to raise funds for the support of one student refugee. He asked if the council would grant free tuition and (if the student should be a home science student) free board at Studholme House.—The board asked that these requests be given sympathetic consideration, and that free hoard at Studholme House be given to a woman refugee student of any faculty. The chancellor said he thought the council would wish to support so laudable an object. There would be no difficulty about free tuition. The proposal was approved, the council to offer all assistance possible. Public Demonstrations The Professorial Board reported having approved of a recommendation

from the science professors that the proposed public laboratory demonstrations should be postponed till 1940. The recommendation was adopted. Home Science Display The dean of the Home Science Faculty wrote stating that the Women's Committee of the Wellington Centennial Exhibition wished the Home Science School to set up an exhibit in its pavilion. She asked for the council's authority. It was decided to ask Professor Strong to submit a report concerning the probable cost, and to give an indication whether the council was to bear the full cost. The proposal was approved in principle. Mr Wallace said he was glad the opportunity had presented itself, but he would like to know more about the question of cost. Appointments The honorary secretary of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs wrote stating that Mr S. R. Whyte had been appointed as representative on the Committee of Adult Education.—Received. Professor Marples and the registrar reported that they had appointed L. Gurr as laboratory assistant in the Department of Zoology—Approved.
