QUEENSTOWN The Weather The weather has been changeable for the last week or so and there has been a number of mild frosts. Rain lias -fallen on several occasions with splendid results to farm lands. There is a good growth of winter feed Queen Carnival Interest is quickening in a queen carnival which was commenced several weeks ago. Competition for the honour of being elected queen is confined to three princesses—Sports (Miss Doris Warren), town (Miss Gladys McCreath), and country (Miss Marjorie Bagrie). The committees and their respective supporters are holding various functions. Basketball Association At the annual meeting of the Wakatipu Basketball Association, Dr Anderson presided. Dr Anderson was reelected president, and Mrs H. R. Eastlake, secretary. The balance sheet showed a successful financial year. Five tftams have entered for the Gardiner Cup Competition and the matches will start on June 14. The association fee for each team was fixed at 2s 6d. It was resolved that this season the association should pay for new poles, rings, and nets, and also the markingoff of one court in the park, which will be used for all matches. It was decided that the association's funds would not permit of assisting teams with grants toward travelling expenses. Permission was given for the holding of a " Yankee" tournament in aid of the sports princess. Rovers and St. Joseph's Clubs were given permission to participate in the Country Day Sports at Invercargill. The draw for the Gardiner Cup competition .is as follows: First Round.—June 14: Arrowtown v. Rovers A, St. Joseph's v. Rovers B, High School a bye. June 21: HighSchool v. St. Joseph's, Arrowtown v. Rovers B, Rovers A a bye. June 28: Arrowtown v. High School, Rovers A v. Rovers B, St. Joseph's a bye. July 5: Rovers A v. St. Joseph's. Rovers B v. High School, Arrowtown a bye. July 12: High School v. Rovers A, Arrowtown v. St. Joseph's, Rovers B a bye. All Arrowtown matches in the first round are to be played at Arrowtown. Second Round.—July 19: St. Joseph's v. High School. Rovers A and B v. Arrowtown. July 26: Rovers B v. Rovers A, St. Joseph's and High School v. Arrowtown. August 2: Rovers A v. High School. Rovers B v. St. Joseph's. August 9: St. Joseph's v. Rovers A, High School v. Rovers B. All matches in the second round are to be played at Queenstown. Personal Mrs H. Golden has returned to her home at Fortrose. Mrs J. Thompson is staying at Winton, where she is the guest of Mr and Mrs Knowles. Mrs T. Saunders and Mrs O. Stevenson are on a visit to Invercargill. Mr W. Robins left on Monday to lake up a position in Dunedin. Miss Rita McNeill (Dunedin) Is spending the term holidays with her sisters.
Mrs M. A. Davidson is visiting the Head of the Lake. Mr and Mrs M. R. Robertson have returned to Queenstown after spending their annual holiday in Central Otago and Dunedin. Mrs A. Inglis has returned to Invercargill. Mrs V. MacDougall and her small son are visiting Bluff, where they are the guests of Mrs J. Hamilton. Dr O'Neill, of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. is the guest of Father Asdagh. Mrs T. Byrne has recently been the guest of Mr and Mrs H. Walker. OMAKAU Progress League At a meeting of the Omakau Progress League the Rev. C. E. Tylee presided. Matters affecting the welfare of the district were dealt with, including the question of extra lighting at the new subdivision. It was decided to draw attention to the need for lights at the Ophir side of the new bridge and along the road leading to Ophir. During a visit to Omakau last September the Minister of Education inspected the new traffic bridge, which is considered to be too narrow for safety. It is understood that the Minister of Public Works will be visiting the district in the near future, and the matter will be brought under his notice. The question of road signs was left in the hands of a member of the executive and the traffic inspector. Rugby Football The A Grade fixture Matakanui v. Tarras, set down for last Saturday, was postponed owing to a number of the visitors' team being ill. A scratch game. Matakanui v. Railwaymen. was played. So far this season no A Grade matches have been played at Omakau, the A team having had a bye the previous Saturday, while the first match of the season was played at Alexandra. The Matakanui B team travelled to Lowburn, where it was defeated by 9 points to 3. The fixtures for next Saturday are as follows: Matakanui A v. Wanaka, at Pembroke; Matakanui B v. Clyde, at Omakau. Shooting Season Local and visiting sportsmen did not have the best of luck at the opening of the. shooting season, very few good bags being obtained. The best sport appears to have been obtained at the Manorburn dam. Parties also visited the Poolburn dam and Matakanui.
Golf Weather conditions were ideal on Saturday, when a medal round was played on the Omakau links. The best cards returned were as follows: — Ladies: Miss Harvey 72, Mrs Charles 77. Mrs Scorgie 87. Men: W. Harper 85 R. Maslin 68. J. T. Trucsdale 73, H.' Ingram 73. J. M. Charles 74, H. F. Gardiner 74. A tournament will be held at Alexandra on Saturday. WANAKA Personal Mr and Mrs Colin Douglas, who have been staying at their Wanaka cottage, returned to Waimate on Sunday. Mr and Mrs Guy Taplcy returned to Dunedin last week. Mr and Mrs F. Norris have returned after a holiday in Dunedin. Mr and Mrs Hudson, of Christchurch, are spending a holiday here. Mr and Mrs Aubrey Paterson, of St. Clair, spent the week-end in Wanaka. Mr and Mrs 5. Roberts, the schoolhouse. Albert Town, are spending the school holidays at Timaru. Mr and Mrs Stanley Botting (Dunedin) are expected this week for the holidays. Miss Jane Halliday has resigned the position of postmistress, Albert Town, after 36 years in the position. CROMWELL Game Season The duck-shooting season continues to be disappointing to sportsmen. Because of the very mild weather conditions recently, birds have been (lying very high. The general opinion is that they arc not so plentiful as in former years. At the week-end conditions were fine and mild, but on Sunday the weather became dull and overcast, with the temperature fall-
ing. Heavy rain fell overnight, but the weather was again fine yesterday morning. Rifle Shooting Thei following is the result of the weekly shoot of the Kawarau Ladies' Rifle Club. The gold button was won bv Mrs Mulrooney after a shoot-off with Mrs Trail. Miss Stark won the silver button. Scores:—Mrs Mulrooney 76—3—79. Mrs Trail 76—4—80, Mrs Belts 75-s—Bo. MILLER'S FLAT Dog Trials The Miller's Flat Collie Club held dog trials on May 11 and May 12 under cold and wet conditions. Mr J. Donald (Patcaroa) acted as judge.
