SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

An extraordinary meeting of the Southern Steam Navigation Company (Limited) was held yesterday, at the offices of the Company, Manse street. Mr H. Driver presided; and there were 12 other shareholders present.— A resolution, "It is resolved that the Southern Steam Navigation Company (Limited) shall be wound up voluntarily,” which was adopted at an extraordinary meeting on April 13th, was now proposed by Mr R. S. Dods. seconded by Mr J. A. Ewen, and was unanimously confirmed.—lt was agreed that Mr C. Caldwell, of the Bank of Australasia, should be associated as a liquidator with the official liquidator; for which latter office Mr J. S Webb was chosen out of three applicants. It was resolved that the remuneration of the liquidators should be five per cent, of the gross amount of assets realised by them. A soiree in connection with the induction of the Rev. A. Greig, M.A., as the minister of North-East Harbor and Portobello. was held in the public rooms near Seaton’s Jetty, on the 13th inst. . The attendance was large, numbering about 180. While it was pleasing to notice the presence of the natriarchs of the place entering into the joy of the occasion, it was equally so to see that young men and maidens, and above all. the mothers, many of them with fine children in their arms were so fully represented Very suitable addresses, characterised by good sense, good feelinu. and brevity were delivered by the Chairman, the Pastor ♦Vie Rev. D. M Stuart Messi-s Gilbert. Gray, and Morris The evening was beautiful and the late hour at which tl moon rose was a good excuse for lengthening a meeting where all seemed to enjoy the occasion and one another. A destructive fire occurred in Grey street, Auckland, on the morning of the 28th ultimo, ending in the total loss of nine shops and dwellinghouses. . . SHIPPING SUMMARY. During the interval since our last summary, via Panama, on the sth instant, there is little to chronicle in matters maritime, one vessel only having arrived from a port beyond the Colonies, that being the Lovet Peacock, from Boston, U.S., on the Bth instant, with a full cargo of American commodities. There has. however, been a brisk coastal trade. Since the sth, exclusive of coasters not reported at Port Chalmers, there have been 16 arrivals and 14 departures, the inward registered tonnage being 4003 and the outward 3843 . The next vessels expected from Home arc the Niphon. from London. 92 days out. and the Caribou from Glasgow, 91 days out. The new floating dock, building at Port Chalmers, is fast approaching completion. She is all planked, and tenders have been called for the caulking. .
