ALEXANDRA Plunket Society The annual meeting of the Alexandra Sub-oranch of the Plunket Society was held on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs E. Russell, the president, was in the chair, and there was a good attendance. Presenting the annual report and balance sheet, the president said that the branch had concluded Us financial year with a credit balance of £9B 2s lOd compared with £94 Is Bd. As a result of the committee undertaking the catering for the stock sales, a profit of £l6 4s had been made. This year the branch had been successful in securing the co-operation of the Pool-burn-Moa Creek branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union, and £5 5s had been collected in that area. Appealing for continued support from the country people, the president pointed out that a car was kept to give service to people in outlying areas. Miss Andrews, district nurse, was doing excellent work. She had'the confidence of mothers and of the committee. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs E. St. John Ambulance At a meeting held in Alexandra on Tuesday night and presided over by the Mayor, it was decided to form a local branch of the St. John Ambulance Association. The Mayor (Mr J. Bringans) referred to the oenefils to be derived from the association. A class had already been held r.nd he thought that members would be willing to help in the recruiting for the association. Mr R. J. Cowie was appointed president and Mr D. Williamson secretary. Obituary A highly respected resident of the district passed away on Friday last in the person of Mr George Dick. The deceased was born in Kippin, Scotland, 89 years ago. Going to Australia in 1880, but disliking the climate, he came to New Zealand. Mr Dick was well known as a gardener for many years, and was recognised as a horticultural expert in Dunedin, where he resided for a time. He was a partner in the firm of Messrs Howden and Moncrielf, and won many trophies in horticultural shows in Dunedin. In 1895 he came to Alexandra and commenced the Manorburn Nurseries, which he continued tending until about 15 years ago. Mr Dick, who was of a retiring disposition, was for 59 years a memI ber of Court Enterprise Foresters’ I Lodge and was a life member-of the 1 Dunstan Horticultural Society. He was married in 1882, but had been a widower for some 15 years. He is survived by three step-daughters. The i funeral, which was held at Alexandra, was conducted by the Rev. H. W. West. Personal . -»■ Mr and Mrs J. M. McLauchlan. of Brighton, are at present spending a holiday at Alexandra. Mrs A. E. Gladstone, who has been on an extended visit to Auckland, has returned to Alexandra. Miss J. O’Kane, of the Dental School staff. Wellington, is at present spending a holiday with her parents in Mr P. Donnelly, of the local Post Office staff, is relieving at Tarras. Mr and Mrs C. Rivers are spending the term holidays in Alexandra. RANFURLY Electric Power Definite information has bene received in Ranfurly that the electric power will be switched on in the district on the evening of May 30. To commemorate the occasion a local committe has made arrangements to hold a ball, the proceeds of which will be given to the Plunket Society. The official switching-on ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. and the ball will be commenced immediately afterwai'ds. Golf The Maniototo Golf Club held its second Medal Match on Saturday last, when the weather conditions were ideal. The winner of the match. G. A. Wilson, returned a card with the net score of 68.
