SEVEN SEAMEN

SENTENCED TO HARD LABOUR SEQUEL TO WELLINGTON INCIDENT (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, Apl. 20. Seven seamen were summoned at East Ham Police Court for disobeying the lawful commands of their captain. All the men were engaged on the s.s Maimoa, of the Shaw Savill and Albion Line, and the offence occurred at Wellington on January 29, the day when the vessel was due to leave. It was stated that the vessel had to be moved to another anchorage to allow the berth to be taken by another ship. As the crew was short the defendants, who belonged to the engineers’ watch, were ordered below to assist, but they refused to go, and repeated their refusal when interviewed by the captain. The defendants who said they were asked to work at a time when they were off duty, were all sentenced to 14 days’ hard labour
