HERBERT MUNDIN’S DEATH
“The man who made the Duke of Windsor laugh ” was one of the titles of Herbert Mundin, the 40-year-old English film comedian, who was killed in a car accident near Hollywood last month. His best part was in “Cavalcade,” in which ho played Bridges, the butler who was killed in a street accident. The producer. Andre Chariot, had seen Mundin under a picrrol cap at Eastbourne in 1926. It made him laugh and he took Mundin to (he Prince of Wales Theatre in London. Here he gave eight command performances, before King George V. Mundin toured America, Australia and Now Zealand, and made more people laugh with the “Co-optimists,” and then turned to films. Ho went to Hollywood and appeared in “Cavalcade,” " Orient Express.” “ David Copperlield,” and “Mutiny on the Bounty.” His latest film was “ The Adventures of Robin Hood.” He was in Christchurch a few years ago in “ Desert Song,” and is seen also in “ The Boy from Barnados.” Mundin, son of a clergyman, used to say: “This face runs away with me. I never know what it is doing.” Mr Mundin’s mother was sitting at her fireside in Cheshire when she heard on the radio that her son had been killed.
