JUDGE AND COSMETICS
In one of the county courts close to London, presided over by the amiable, speedy and sometime unorthodox Judge Drucquer, a friend witnessed a judicial method that has escaped notice, says a London columnist. Judge Drucquer was trying a case concerning the sale of cosmetics, and he had to decide whether a certain face cream was up to sample. Unable to decide between the conflicting views of the experts called by both sides, he applied some of the sample to the back of his right hand and some of the questioned cream to the left. Still he was unable to decide. He, thought for a moment. Then: “Is there any lady in court unconnected with this case? ” he asked. A young lady was found who diffidently admitted some acquaintance with preparations of this sort. “Let her be sworn,” directed the judge. He then asked her to apply cream from the two jars to either cheek. She immediately pronounced the questioned jar to be inferior. Judgment was given accordingly.
