ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

MOSGIEL AND NORTHERN LEAD MAORI HILL DEFEATED The surprise of Saturdays round of Association football matches was the defeat of Maori Hill by the youthful High School Old Boys, while Mosgiel and Northern scored heavily in their respective games. Seacliff marked its re-appearance in the competition by defeating Roslyn-Wakari. The results were:—• Mosgiel 10, Caversham 1. Northern 10, Mornington 2. Seacliff 2, Roslyn-Wakari nil. Old Boys 4, Maori Hill 3. POSITIONS OF TEAMS The following table gives the relative positions of teams in the Senior Division:—

MOSGIEL v. CAVERSHAM In a high-scoring game, Mosgiel beat Caversham by 10 goals to I, The teams were: — Mosgiel—Hall; Ruddiman, R. Steven; Stenhouse, C. Skinner, Pauli; Nicholson, Rogers, J. Skinner, W. Steven. Caversham. Stevenson; Beale, McLean; Truesdale, Bennett, Williams: Todd, Jack Gilchrist, James Gilchrist. Meiklejohn, McSkimming. The opening play was bright and evenly contested, both sides displaying crisp passing movements which, however, were nullified oy sound defence. Stevenson early distinguished, himself by saving w’ell from J. Skinner. A miss by Bennett let Mosgiel through on the left, Davidson sending hard to goal. Stevenson failed to hold and from the rebound J. Skinner opened the scoring. Good backing up by the Mosgiel halves gave Mosgiel the advantage and a weak clearance from McLean was returned by Stenhouse. Nicholson crossing to J. Skinner to score. Mosgiel 2, Caversham nil. Caversham regained control of the play, Meiklejohn and McSkimming going through, when a good shot by Todd was deflected against the goal for Ruddiman to clear. Still pressing hard, Caversham showed weakness in front and Hall safely dealt with three shots. From midfield play, Mosgiel worked the ball to Caversham’s area, J. Skinner receiving to show good control once more to slip by Beale and score. Again Mosgiel’s perfect team work and passing prevailed, Nicholson and Rogers outplaying the defence to give J. Skinner possession, and a fourth goal resulting. Mosgiel was definitely on top now, but Stevenson was clearing with confidence and was applauded for a neat one-handed save. The issue was keenly contested for the remaining 10 minutes, Caversham showing great dash.

Early in the second spell J. Skinner’s judgment in making openings paved the way for W. Steven to add a fifth goal. The Caversham players’ failure to place themselves in position to meet Mosgiel’s methodical play unsettled the side, and play seldom got past the halfway mark. Another weak return by McLean was picked up by J. Skinner, who again made no mistake. Mosgiel 6, Caversham nil. Play next moved out to Todd on the right. A perfect centre by the winger was netted by Meiklejohn. Mosgiel 6, Caversham 1. Davidson, playing deep, sent the ball up to J. Skinner, who placed nicely between the backs, and Davidson cut in to beat Stevenson. Mosgiel 7, Caversham 1. Mosgiel eased up, and when Caversham was awarded a penalty kick, James Gilchrist placed well outside. Towards the end Caversharn’s defence could not hold Mo:3giel when the latter came away with brilliant passing work, and goals followed from W. Steven, Rogers, and J. Skinner. The game ended: Mosgiel 10 goals. Caversham .. .. 1 goal. Mr J. Welch was referee. OLD BOYS v. MAORI HILL Played at Prospect Park, the Old Boys-Maori Hill game provided spectators with some good football. The reappearance of G. Sutherland at fullback for Old Boys strengthened the side, which fully deserved its win. The teams were;— Maori Hill. —Wills; Mills, Bayne; Cuthbert, McQuarrie, Little; Wadsworth. Hendren. Romeril. Haldane, Balk. Old Boys.—Nixon; Sutherland. Nelson; McGillivray, Race, McNarry; Kidd. Groves. Paul. Foote, Gregory. Play was even from the kick-off. Hill’s first attack being returned by Nixon, Old Boys moved play upfleld and Groves headed past Wills. Old Boys 1, Hill nil. Hill crossed hard, with Balk and Romeril troubling the defence, but the latter eventually relieved, and when Old Boys’ forwards attacked a misunderstanding between the Hill backs allowed Groves to net again. Old Boys 2, Hill nil. From the kick-off. Hill mgde lively play, several attacks being unsuccessful until Haldane scored a clever goal Old Boys 2, Hill 1. Old Boys kept the ball moving at a smart pace, which gave it the advantage, and, before the interval, following a nice movement, Gregory scored to give Old Boys the lead at half time 3—l. The second spell opened with improved play by Hill and, from a concerted movement, Haldane scored hfs second goal. Old Boys 3, Hill 2. Keen play followed, both sides defending well. Hill strove hard for the equaliser. and a draw appeared likely with Romeril, Hendren and Balk narrowly missing the goal. With only four minutes to go. Old Boys’ defence lifted the pressure, the forwards going through nicely for Paul to finish off with a fine goal. Old Boys 4, Hill 2. Hill again forced the play, a determined attack ending in Romeril scoring with a shot which gave Nixon no chance Play finished shortly after with the score Old Boys 4 goals Maori Hill 3 goals Mr W. M. Smith was referee SEACLIFF v. ROSLYN-WAKARI Playing its first game after being readmitted to the senior competition, Seacliff beat Roslyn-Wakari by two goals to nil The teams were:— Seacliff.—Shaw: Anderson. Ruddiman: Ives, Scott, Rogers, Fyfe, Henderson, Dudman, Walsh, Montgomery Roslyn-Wakari.—Cooper; Simpson. Rutherford: Smythe, Ness, McCallion, Ramsay, Wilson, Welham. D. Smythe. M-Gregor. There was little between the teams in the early stages, both goalies and the full-backs displaying sound defence. McCallion sent Roslyn forward on attack, Welham missing a good opportunity to goal, Shaw made a good save from Wilson and from a throw-in Scott slipped the ball through to Montgomery, who closed in. Cooper saved brilliantly at the expense of a corner, which was placed over. Up and down play continued with the defence being superior to the attack, and a fairly even spell ended without a score.

On the resumption of play, Seaclitf rearranged its team, Montgomery and Fyfe changing to the inside; positions. Ives sent play to Dudman. the latter beat Cooper with a hard, low drive. Seacliff 1, Roslyn nil. Roslyn advanced, shots from Ramsay and Wilson being well saved by Shaw. Seacliff, showing better combination than in the first half, now forced the play. Montgomery scored, but the goal was disallowed for an offside. A further movement saw Simpson head clear, and when Roslyn went through on the left, Anderson was safe. Returning to the attack, Ramsay gave Welham a chance, but the centre’s shot was weak. Both teams were tiring and when Roslyn came away Shaw held a shot by

Welham. Anderson headed clear to Ives, who crossed w'ell for Montgomery to score close in. Seacliff 2, Roslyn nil. With both sides kicking too hard, play lacked combination. Roslyn rallied with Welham, McGregor and McCallion being prominent, but Shaw cleared safely and the game ended: Seacliff 2 goals. Roslyn-Wakari .. Nil. M:: A. Riach was referee. NORTHERN v. MORNINGTON In the Northern-Mornington game, played at the Gardens. Northern was on top throughout. McLean, shortly after the kick-off. scored from a corner, and thereafter the Mornington goalie was kept busy. A second goal was netted by McFarlane from a centre by Reynolds, and within another minute McLean had scored again. The hill goalie. Agnew, retired with an injury to his finger, and his place was taken by Martin. Scofield then scored for Mornington, but the respite was of short duration. Reynolds crossed from the wing and scored again. The second half was a repetition of the first. Mornington gained one more goal when Harris passed to Scofield, who scored. Reynolds was prominent in the scoring combinations for Northern, together with McFarlane and McLean. The neatest work of the day was the goal obtained by Anderson, who brought the ball well down the field and passed to McFarlane, who returned it. Anderson placing the ball neatly past the goalie to score again. Gordon added a goal from a penalty, and the game ended:— Northern 10 goals. Mornington .. .. 2 goals. Mr F. G.
