OTAGO A.R.P. ACTIVITIES

ro THE EDITOR

Sir,—ln this morning’s issue of your paper I notice a letter in which a correspondent asks his Worship the Mayor a series of questions regarding air raid precautions. That the civic authorities have had this matter in hand for a couple of years is well known to most of the public. Furthermore, we can be certain that Mr Allen has made a study of all the latest literature on this topic, and is quite competent to deal with the problem. As for the members of the Mayor’s Emergency Committee, it is inconceivable that any man would be invited to act with this body unless his Worship was satisfied he knew all there was to know about his particular section of the scheme. We can be sure every contingency' has been thought of and prepared for months ago. Maybe to avoid creating public uneasiness our worthy Mayor has not made known his plans, but let a mustard gas bomb fall in Princes street to-morrow, and we would see the machinery commence to operate. Red Cross squads would speedily be in action, and within a few minutes that alert and energetic citizen Mr W. Begg would be on the spot directing his labour gangs as to the measures necessary to neutralise poison gas. Those who know Mr Allen can be certain he has made all the necessary preparations, and there is no doubt he will continue to give the emergency scheme the same thought and energy he has given it since he took office I am, etc.. Respirator. April 29.
