VICTORIAN BUSH FIRES

COOL CHANGE IN WEATHER, DANGER OVER FOR PRESENT MELBOURNE, Feb. 14. (Received Feb. 14, at 11 p.m.) A cool change, which was expected for the last two days, has brought an end to the bush-fire danger for the present. Although 40 houses were in danger in various places yesterday, only four were destroyed, a change of wind sweeping the fires back into burnt-out country. Fire-fighters are still .standing by in case of emergencies. An open finding was recorded by the coroner to-day at inquests on the eight victims of the Toolangi fire last month. The coroner said he was unable to say with certainty how the fire began, but he was inclined to agree with forest officers that the fire was deliberately lighted. The total of the Fire Relief Fund is now reaching the £200,000 mark, but the claims lodged total £ 1,000,000.
