AMENITIES SOCIETY

MEETING OF. EXECUTIVE A meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Amenities Society was held yesterday, the president (Mr J. Crosby Morris) .occupying the chair. There were also' present:—Messrs J. L. Salmond, J. Crow, C. O. McKellar, James Degg. J. McGeorge, R. Fountain, S. P. Cameron, A. C. Cameron. H. P. West, John Ash and Dr Muilin Centennial Memorial It was decided to recommend to the Centennial Memorial Committee that the Dunedin memorial should take the form of a road from Pine Hill to Signal Hill, completing the existing roads.— Several members offered the opinion that such a road would be a great asset to the city and would do much to beautify the surroundings of Dunedin. St. Clair Playground Mr A. C. Cameron reported that after protracted discussions with the City Corporation finality had been reached in regard to the children’s playground at St. Clair. The sub-committee set up by the society and a sub-committee from the St. Clair Improvement Society had agreed to make a further payment of £lll to the City Council, provided the work was completed before December last. This offer had been accepted. —While regret was expressed by members that the society’s original plan had been departed from, gratification was expressed, that the work had been completed. Mr Cameron further reported that the council had promised to make provision in this year’s estimates for a lavatory for women and children at the playground. General Mr Begg said that the city reserves on the lower side of the road to Whare Flat were beginning to obscure the views that could be obtained of the Taieri plain. These views were wall worth having, and he suggested that the council should be aoproached and asked to cut gaps in the plantation so that the vistas would be retained.— The suggestion was approved. It was decided to draw the attention of the City Council to the bad s.ate of the Town Belt below the Bslleknowes golf course, and also to suggest that grass on the belt should be cut where necessary. Pleasure was expressed py several members at the action of the City Council in deciding to make it an offence to throw tram tickets and other refuse on the streets.—lt was decided to write congratulating tha council and ■lso to suggest that additional receptacles should be provided at tram termini for the disposal of tickets. It was decided that the executive should meet in future once a month.
