Chimney Fire
A chimney fire in King Edward road engaged the attention of the City Fire Brigade at 7.50 a.m. yesterday.
Intense Heat in Melbourne
“ To put one’s head outside the front door was to meet a blast of furnace heat." In this manner Miss Majory Mumford, of Dunedin, who is spending a holiday in Melbourne with her mother, wrote telling a friend of the. intense heat which was being experienced on January 13. A strong north wind blew volumes of smoke from the disastrous bush fires, making conditions most unpleasant for everybody. At the time of writing Miss Mumford said that people were flocking to the beaches in thousands. At St Kilda bathers were in the water up till midnight, the floodlit spectacle being a striking one to the Dunedin girl. Picking Winners Beforehand
“ It’s the early bird that catches the worm." Perhaps it was that thought that prompted many people to visit the Dunedin Railway Station shortly after 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon to witness the arrival of some 44 horses, which will be included in the fields to-day at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting. Several of the animals came from Christchurch, but the majority of them were picked up at wayside stations en route. A barrier had been erected at the south end of the platform, and behind this racing enthusiasts. both men and women, had a premature glimpse of the trotters which will be seen in action to-day. Smiles, nods, and gesticulations signified the unspoken thoughts of the watchers, some of whom appeared to have made up their minds before they departed which horses would be carrying their money to-dav. Manufacture of Aircraft
Since the announcement that the British Air Mission which is going to Australia will also visit New Zealand, the Christchurch city authorities have lost no time in deciding to put forward claims for a site at Harewood, if any decision is made to manufacture aircraft in the Dominion. The Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane) has instructed the city engineer, Mr A. R. Galbraith, to write to both the Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones) and the Minister in Charge of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr D. G. Sullivan), setting forth the advantages of the Harewood area for such a purpose. There is still a large portion of the area bought by the city at Harewood for the construction of an airport undeveloped. With that ground brought into use there would be, according to Mr Galbraith, ample room for an aircraft factory to have its own grounds without limiting in any way the operations of the municipal airport.
