A New Zealand bat, one of a species which is becoming increasingly rare, was caught in Gwavas Bush, Tikokino, when a totara ’ tree in which it was sleeping was felled. The small mammal, described as “ a mouse with wings,” has become a popular pet. The bat, which is of the same colour as a mouse, lives in a cardboard box during the day, and seeks food by night.
