RANFURLY Cricket Fine weather prevailed last Saturday for the continuation of the Maniototo Cricket Association’s competition. On the local ground Ranfurly with a total of 183, successfully defended the Greer-Cup against Waipiata, who replied with 48. Batting for Ranfurly, Hanrahan played a good innings ana appeared set for a big score when he was run out for 62, his total including thrde 6’s and six 4’s. Forrester in a brisk innings compiled 47. including four 6’s and four 4’s. In the Patearoa-Naseby match Patearoa again compiled a large total. J. Blakely and E. Blakely, who have been batting consistently all through the season, retired with 79 and 63 respectively. Details of scores:— Ranfurly, 183 (Hanrahan 62, Forrester 47, Mulholland 29. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Orders for Liquor Alexander Bain, of Dunedin, was charged in the Gore Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., with soliciting orders lor liquor in the no-licence district of Mataura. j The defendant wrote entering a plea of 1 guilty. Sergeant J. Abel gave evidence | that Bain, who was employed by a > Dunedin firm, had been soliciting orders for liquor at Gore, where, to the knowledge of the police, three had been taken. The defendant was a first . offender. It was a common practice, . he said, for men to go round unlicensed districts at Christmas time soliciting orders for liquor. Electricity Charges Further consideration of the question of the repayment of alleged overcharges by the Southland Electric Power Board, and later by its successor, the Public Works Department, to the consumers of electricity in the borough of Gore was given at the three-weekly meeting of the Gore Borough Council. The matter was introduced by Cr R. S. Green, who commented that it was time the Government was reminded that something should be done. ,f We have the assurance of the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) that the matter has only to receive the approval of Cabinet.” he stated. On Cr Green’s suggestion it was agreed to telegraph the Government pointing out that the electricity consumers of Gore were still awaiting a reply to their demands.

Obituary The death occurred at the Gore Public Hospital on Tuesday of Dr William Grove, after a brief illness. Dr Grove, who had followed his profession as a medical practitioner at Mataura for the last five years, was born in Scotland. He took his degrees at the Glasgow University, and, after gaining experience, in the city, he took up a position on the medical staff of the hospital for diseases of the skin at Newcastle-on-Tyne. Dr Grove specialised in this branch of the profession, and he gained wide repute for many successful and difficult operations which he performed. Deciding to join, relatives in New Zealand, he came to the Dominion as a young man, and subsequently set up a practice in Dunedin. Later he purchased a practice at Heriot, West Otago, and after a sojourn there of several years he moved to Tokonui and later to Fortrose. Some five years ago Dr Grove moved to Mataura. From the outbreak of the Great War he gave service on the transports, mainly on the run from England to India, andl at the conclusion of hostilities he remained in the latter country for about a year before returning to the Dominion. Wherever ( he was stationed Dr Grove took an active interest m sporting affairs, having held office with Rugby football, cricket, athletic, yachting and hockey organisations. Ha was also a member of the 1.0.0. F. Lodge and the Masonic Order. Baths at Gore

One of the liveliest dlscusslomi which, has been heard in the Council. Chambers for some time took place on. the subject of a site for the erection of public baths at Gore at the threeweekly meeting of the Gore Borough Council, • . Last month the council agreed by nine votes to three to purchase a sue in River street for the baths at a cost, of £540. At the meeting Cr R. S. Green moved a motion, notice oil which had been given, that the resolution on the minute book relating to the purchase of the site in River street; be rescinded. The motion provoked a heated discussion, during which, there was a good deal of straight talking by councillors. Cr Green, moving’ the motion, explained that he had been unable to attend the previous meeting, and contended that the price asked for the section, £540. was exorbitant In his opinion there were borough reserves which were just as suitable, and which could be offered to the Baths Committee at no cost to the ratepayers.. Cr P. R. Mallon expressed opposition to the motion, contending that despite: assurances by councillors that they wanted baths, they placed every obstacle in the way. He moved as an amendment that the motion be rejected. ' ’ After a lengthy and heated discussion the motion was put to the meeting and carried by seven votes to five. Later, the question of another site was discussed. Cr G. C. Hamilton explained that the Eastern Southland Women’s Hockey Association would be prepared to offer a portion of Hockey Park, which was on a borough reserve, for the erection of baths. A further suggestion was offered that part of the Caledonian Ground be utilised, On a vote being taken it was agreed that the council approach the Hockey Association to have the baths erected on the north-west corner of Hockey Park, The Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman), intimated that in the eyent .of the Hockey Association being agreeable,, the borough engineer would take levels immediately. TEMUKA Fire at Clandeboye Fire completely destroyed the residence of Mr and Mrs J. A. Peattie at Clandeboye in the early hours of yesterday morning. Both Mr and Mrs Peattie and their three children escaped in their night attire. The residence contained seven rooms, and the origin is believed to have been caused by a defective chimney. The house and contents were insured, hut the amounts are not obtainable. Mr and Mrs Peattie have lost everything, and were unable to save even their clothing.
