LIFE SAVING

FINANCE FOR SOCIETIES LEGISLATION PROPOSED MINISTER’S TRIBUTE TO WORK (Special to Daily Times) ROTORUA, Jan. 25. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) intends to ask the Government’s assent to the preparation of legislation placing the lifesaving societies, in regard to finance, in the same category as the fire brigades of the Dominion. This announcement was made by Mr Parry in opening the New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championships here to-day.

“ Every swimmer is a potential life-saver whose work is done not from any spirit of heroism but from the spirit of humanitarianism,” Mr Parry said. “ The work of the lifesavers is noble; it is necessary, but what practical public support do th§y receive? From my knowledge many of these men have used their own personal resources with which to equip their stations. That should not be, and must be rectified. “ I propose asking the Government’s assent to the preparation of legislation,” Mr Parry added, “ placing the life-saving societies, in regard to finance, in the same category as the fire brigades of - the Dominion. By that method finance will be assured the societies as a recompense for their laudable and valuable services—a recognition long overdue.”
