IRISH REPUBLICANS
THE ARRESTED LEADERS
“ INTERNED ” INDEFINITELY
'lndependent Gable Service)
BELFAST, Jan. 12.
The I.R.A. leaders arrested on December 22 have been informed that they will be “ interned ” indefinitely. They were not formally charged with any offence, but were detained under a special Act whereby the Government is empowered to intern alleged political offenders without trial.
The arrests of the leaders of the Irish Republican Army in Northern Ireland were made as a result of a plot against the life of Lord Craigavon and other members of the Cabinet. Zero hour was to have been January 1. The Ministry for Home Affairs issued a statement saying that the Irish Republican Army was prepared for attacks on prominent persons and on Government and other property during Christmas and New Year. It was, therefore, decided that there was no alternative but to arrest and intern well-known leaders. 34 of whom were arrested.
