THE WORLD TO-DAY

ANARCHY INCREASING CIVILISATION THREATENED RETURN TO CRUELLEST PERIODS (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright)

PARIS, Jan. 13, (Received Jan. 14, at 0.45 a.m.)

M. Herriot, in a remarkable inaugural speech after his election as President of the Chamber, warned

France that civilisation is threatened by growing anarchy all over the world.

“ Our age has shown a return to the cruellest periods of the past. Political and religious liberty is besieged and persecution is rife.”

• He thanked the Pope and President Roosevelt for making a stand against violence. He said there was no Frenchman who did not desire peace, but a free people could not allow their frontier to be the subject of bargaining. France hoped for better relations with Germany after a recognition of her frontiers.
