RACING AND TROTTING

VALMARCH SUCCESSFUL IN SPRINT

<From Our Special Reporter)

VINCENT TROTTING STAKES,

Of £IOO, second horse £ls, third £5.

OMAKAU, Jah. 13,

One mile and a-quartcr,

The Vincent Jockey Club’s annual meeting was opened at Matakanui in fine but windy weather to-day. There was a large attendance, and the track was fast and in excellent-order. The racing was good throughout, with some exciting finishes. A feature of the meeting was the operation of the new totalisator, which was in use for the first time. The effect of this improvement was illustrated by the fact that for the first time for many years th#> day’s programme concluded at the scheduled time. The totalisator business was handled with despatch and to the satisfaction of the club and investors alike, thanks to the admirable facilities afforded and the employment of a considerably increased staff. The tote handled £55/6 10s. compared with £5103 10s for the first day last year, an increase of £423. , Following are the results:OPHIR HACK HANDICAP, Of £205, second horse £ls, third £5. The excellent form that has been shown this season by Defaulter has brought him under discussion far outside New Zealand. The Defoe colt is now regarded as the best three-year-old to race in New Zealand for a long time, and Australians are looking forward to his appearance against their cracks. , . ~ Evidence was given this week of the high opinion held concerning Defaulter. Mr H. D. Greenwood received an offer of IO.OOOgns for him. but he turned the offer down. This is good news, for it is always a matter for regret when the best horses leave the Dominion. There should be a stud future for Defaulter when his racing concludes. Defaulter will go north on Monday to run in the Wellington Cup. The original intention, in this event, was to-miss Wingatui, but it is possible, even now. that he will be a starter in

the James Hgzlett Gold Cup, and with Royal Chief also a probable runner that race should be the event of the season. The present plan is for Defaulter to leave at the end of next month for Sydney, where he will race in the autumn. He will open in the Chipping Norton Stakes, a weight-for-age race of a mile and a-quarter at Warwick Farm, early in April, He is not in the Australian Jockey Club’s St, Leger. but the Sydney Cup and the weight-for-age races at Randwick will provide opportunities for meeting Australia’s best horses. To date, the colt has won £5855 in stakes, as a result of 15 wins, a second, and a third in 20 starts. He has won his last seven races.

The trip to Trentham which F. D. Jones had in view with Royal Chief and Moorsotis has been cancelled Royal, Chief galloped nine furlongs yesterday. but he was lame after he got back to his trainer’s stable. It was found later that he had bruised his off fore heel. Jones has given it careful attention, and the horse was much better this morning, but the need for a few days of idleness has settled his chance of being at his best for the Wellington Cup. Provided nothing else occurs. Royal Chief should be all right in a few days, and Jones will go on with his preparation for the James Hazlett Gold Cup at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next month. After that Royal Chief will contest the Awapuni Cup. and possibly he will take on the Great Autumn Handicap as a wind-up for the season. He will then have a short spell, and then will be prepared for another spring campaign in Australia. The cancellation of F. D. Jones’s trip to Trentham has caused some changes in the plans of other Riccarton trainers. F. Christmas will now go north on Monday night with The Sandwichman. Gay Parade, and Teak, while A. McAulay will travel at the same lime with Dictate. D. Cotton will leave on Monday night with Density. Grey Night, and Jewish Lad. and A. McMullan will also go north with Courtyard. Rebel Queen is still showing signs of sorness, due to striking herself, and it is unlikely that she will travel to Trentham.

F. Hall plans to take Rebel Chief north at the end of next week to run in the sprint on the final day. this being his only engagement at Trentham. Arctic King A. Jenkins has been engaged to ride Arctic King in the Wellington Cup. Nominations Due

Nominations for the Central Otago Racing Club’s meeting on January 21 close to-night. Good Going At the present time the Trentham course is reported to be in excellent order. Frequent rain has contributed to that most desirable state of affairs. The Pace

The Wellington Cup is not likely to be • a slowly-run race if some of the light-weights are sent .to justify their presence in the field. The Wellington Cup

The Wellington Cup meeting will be commenced on Thursday of next week, continued on Saturday, and concluded on Monday, January 23. the anniversary of the province.

A Buyer’s Chance The numerical strength of the catalogue of yearlings to go under the hammer at the national sales will very probably supply a great opportunity for buyers, as the market may not prove able to absorb such a lengthy list.

Real Quality The yearling colts to be sent up to the national sales from the Elderslie Stud were paraded prior to the opening of the sale on Thursday, and deservedly came in for very favourable comment. They should compare favourably with those of any other stud contributing to the catalogue. The National Sales

The national yearling and bloodstock sales were originally dated for Friday. January 20, but those interested should note that the date has been advanced to Wednesday, the 18th. The sale of brood'mares. stallions, etc., will be held on Friday, the 20th.

The Best Horse The late Mr G. D. Greenwood has been described as a lucky owner. Nothing was farther from the truth. The “ luck ” consisted in the fact that the best “ horse ” connected with the stable was R. J. Mason, who never had a superior as a trainer. Anticipating Defeat

The chance of some horses with important engagements at the Wellington Cup meeting are already seriously discounted by the fact that inexperienced riders will have the mount. Usually the inexperienced rider gets into all the trouble that is going in a race. The Wellington Cup has been lost at least two or three times by inexperienced riders being put on sure winners.

High Caste All going well with him after his arrival at Melbourne, the first race High Caste may be called upon to contest in Australia may be the Futurity Stakes, of £3OOO, weight-for-age, with penalties and allowances, seven furlongs, at Caulfield on February 25 The race is one that is seldom attempted by two-year-olds, and the last winner of that age was Palmer, by Pilgrim’s Progress, who won in 1900. and carried 5.12, having the benefit of an allowance. High Caste will be 1 thoroughly tested if opposed to a horse of the class of Ajax, and a real line on his worth should be secured from his form in Melbourne. If his connections decide to miss the Futurity Stakes with him there are several richly-en-dowed two-year-old races such as the V.R.C. and A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes that should suit him. Komicta

The two-year-old filly Konnefa has proved a good investment for Mr Max Steinberg at the 290gns he paid for her at the yearling sales at Trentham last January, having earned £760 in six starts. Some weeks ago Mr Steinberg refused an offer of 3000gns for Konneta, and in consequence her good form at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting must have been very pleasing to him. Although she missed a place in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Konneta displayed brilliant speed, and she was seen to advantage in winning the Criterion Handicap with 9.0 and missing the Sylvia Handicap by half a head with 9.9. On the score of conformation and breeding (says the Auckland Herald) Konneta has much to recommend her, and she should have a high stud value when retired from racing. She is a splendidly-developed filly by Bulandshar from Sunny Hours, by Leighton from Los Vegas, by Boniform from La Valerie, by Seaton Delaval from Nordenfeldt, and she belongs to the Charente, by Nordenfeldt. and she belongs to the same family as the good horses Nonetle and Client.

Salamagundi Any doubt about the potency of Salamagundi is dispelled by the following report of foalings to him this season:—Colts were produced to him by Balia Salla, Strathallan, June the Third, Ace of Hearts, Flicker, Fairform, Broken Rule, Cetchela, Winsome Sister, Coal Pit, Kindly Light, Balboa— Pershore mare, Direct Hit, Bright Mark, and filly foals by Spean Bridge. Enwood, Tatarepo, Royal Emblem. Lochlaggan, Waiau Maid, Honest Maid, Salanui, Bay Biddy, Ruling Light, Patricia Holm, Shelter, Roman Lake, Western Song's dam, Miss Anomaly, Paigle, Shock, Glentruin’s Daughter, Tray Bon, Flag Signal, and two other mares.

A Winning Line Eulogy is one of the most successbrood mares ever imported to New Zealand, and the figures made by some of her descendant mares with filly foals at foot showed that the market was all in favour of the buyer. Endorse, with a Solicitor General filly foal at foot and served again made only 275gns. Gobble, with a filly foal by Solicitor General and served again, could not bo considered dear at 475gns. A Gift

Sceptre made IO.OOOgns as a yearling and proved cheap at the price. At the dispersal sale of the Elderslie Stud a shapely filly, but unfortunately with a damaged pastern, sold at 45gns. Skybird, the dam of the filly, was got by Sky Rocket, a son of Sunstar and Maid of the Mist, a daughter of Sceptre. How any one with ambition in the way of breeding let the filly go at the price is a puzzle Maid of the Mist was got by Cyllene from Sceptre, and also the dam of Craigan Eran, winner of the 2000 Guineas and second in the Derby. Sunny Jane, winner of the Oaks, and Hamoaze, the dam of Buchan, Tamar. St. Germaur, and Saltash, Sceptre won £38,225 and sold at £25,000. Daniel Defoe

A severe loss was suffered by the death of the two-year-old Daniel Defoe, who died of paralysis after an illness lasting about a week. He proved himself a brilliant colt, but such a big sort that it would require time to get him into real racing shape. He won at the time of asking when saddled for the Taita Handicap at the Wellington spring meeting. He afterwards ran second to Submission, and Baran beat him at Riccarton. With ordinary luck Daniel Defoe would have developed into a high-class colt. Daniel Defoe was got by Defoe from Aratulla. by Arausio —Martulla, by Martian—Tortulla. Paper Slipper

There arc opinions held in different quarters that Paper Slipper does not race well at Trentham. As a matter of fact, he ran one of the very best efforts of his life in the North Island Challenge Stakes of ,1937. Francis Drake started favourite, but a cold broke on him when doing a preliminary. Nevertheless, he jumped out with Haughty Winner, and they, in front of Paper Slipper and Smoke Screen, raced away from Royal Chief, who at the far turn was several lengths away and apparently hopelessly out of it, Francis Drake collapsed after reaching the straight, and the stable mates, Paper Slipper and Haughty Winner, were fighting out a hard finish all the way up the straight and apparently had the result between them when Royal Chief “ dropped from the clouds,*’ and, catching the others in the last stride, won by a nose from Paper Slipper, who beat , Haughty Winner by a head. Paper Slipper had 9.6 and Royal Chief 7.8. They ran Imin 27$sec on a slow track. Too much use was made with Paper Slipper in being apked to beat his stable mate too far from home, and the fact cost him a successful result to one of the best, if not the best, race he has ever run. Weights and Measures

Applying the weight-for-age scale to a handicap compiled on handicap form is about on a par with applying the speed of a sailing ship to one propelled by steam. A good horse rises superior to the cast-iron measure laid down by the weight-for-age scale, and an ordinary horse falls below the standard scale. It then required the poundage provided by a handicap to balance form and by the stretch of imagination can the weight-for-age scale balance form. Yet the fact remains that the critics of form in Australia and New Zealand invariably refer to the weight-for-age scale when discussing a handicap based on form. They even drag in sex allowance in connection with a' handicap. If a colt and a filly ran a dead heat the sex allowance could not come into consideration if they subsequently met in a handicap. A handicap is supposed to measure racing merit, but the weight-for-age scale ever since compiled in the dark ages of racing has never been able to measure racing merit. That is why a Defaulter has been able to enjoy a triumphant march when racing at weight-for-age or at special weights. It requires a handicap to supply the real test of merit. Anyone conversant with the methods adopted by the most successful trainers in England know that in a trial a horse is subjected to the test of weight with pace-makers to make it an effective test as far as possible and not by putting up light-weight riders and sending them against the watch. The watch can measure speed, but it cannot measure the atmospheric conditions which not only change from day to day. but several times during the same day. In much the same way comments on the weights allotted Rpyal Chief and Defaulter in the Wellington Cup have failed to note that topweights should be regarded as handicapped under the troy measure and those below 9.0 treated with the more generous poundage allowed under the avoirdupois scale. The fact remains that weight tells the same tale under weight-for-age as in a handicap, only more ■so in the latter.

Missing The failure of a punter on either of the two days set down for settling over the holiday racing has perturbed bookmakers. who, it is stated, are due to receive at least £3OOO from him. The backer, a colourful figure on the principal racecourses in Sydney and Melbourne. is renowned for his plunges, and heavy betting by him has become so common that it passes without comment. At times he has made spectacular recoveries, and when results were going against him on the two days of the A.J.C. Summer Cup meeting little or no notice was taken of it. Nor was there any demur (says the Sydney Herald) when the first settling day passed by without any appearance. The likelihood of the absence of the punter was known when he informed several of his bookmakers that it would be necessary for him to realise on securities before he could settle his accounts. After the second day had passed there was more concern and no one seems to know where he now is. Credit operations on a racecourse are for ever a source of wonderment, even to members of the public who are regular racegoers. With a nod of the head, transactions involving thousands of pounds are completed on every race. The bookmaker’s clerk makes a note in his book. and. although there is no witness and no contract, the number of disputed bets is negligible. From time to time punters, and sometimes —but not frequently—bookmakers become more involved than is convenient for them, and although bookmakers are reported to be carrying immense sums in bad debts there arc times when delinquents experience a change infortune and come along and settle. Bookmakers recently moved to have a section included in the racing legislation permitting them to sue for the recovery of debts contracted an the racecourse, and were keenly disappointed when recent amendments to the laws were passed without mention of the subject.

Horsepower was beaten more by bad luck in the run than lack of racing merit at Auckland, and may upset opinions in the other direction at Timaru.

Van Derby Van Derby is booked to make an attempt to lower his record of 2mlu 1 l-ssec at the Alexandra Park meeting of February 11 and 15. A Good Pair

Mr J. Richardson has two good arrows in his quiver to shoot at the principal event to be run at Timaru to-day. Colonel Grattan and Toorak will be both hard to beat with a good run. Bracketed Horses

At the Timaru meeting to-day the following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator: — Salisbury Handicap.—Devotion and Battlevale. John Hole Memorial—Colonel Grattan and Toorak. Kerrytown Handicap.—Devotion and Battlevale. Pareora Handicap.—Toorak and Iraq. A Tip The Trotting Association has drawn up and circulated to clubs standard procedure for the guidance of judicial committees in the conduct of inquiries This is designed to safeguard the interests of persons involved and should reduce the risk of decisions being voided on appeal on the ground that an inquiry was not properly conducted. With good acceptances and wellbalanced fields, the Cambridge Trotting Club should stage a successful meeting to-morrow, and the. course, recently remodelled* will provide good going. The Summer Handicap has drawn a fine field of useful improving pacers, including Peter Smith, whose latest form indicates that he will reach Cup standard. His most dangerous opponent will be Bold Venture. Royal Direct and Kete Kura are the form horses in the President’s Handicap, and they should stage a fine battle. A visiting trotter, Paddy s Harvest, is likely to make it warm for local maidens, Horses who may find solid support are:—

Nell Volo, the best trotter ever owned and trained in Auckland, and one of the greatest trotters ever to race in the Dominion, is once more to thrill the crowds. The daughter of Peter Volo three seasons ago was mated with the American-bred horse Gallant Knight. The union was without result, and again the following season she was missed to U. Scott. Then, just 12 months ago, she was mated with Great Bingen, and. for the third time, no foal resulted. F. J. Smith, her owner, has now decided to race her again, and this week she was placed in work at Takanini. In the classes as now provided in Auckland, Nell Volo would be called upon to concede substantial starts to most of her opponents, but at Addington, where the classes are much tighter, she would be well positioned in the handicaps to secure a stake or two, TRENTHAM FIELDS ACCEPTANCES FOR FIRST DAY TWENTY IN THE CUP (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 13. PLANS FOR HIGH CASTE FIRST AUSTRALIAN OUTING FUTURITY STAKES IN VIEW Although he won only by short margins, the performances of High Casta at the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting at Ellerslie stamped him as the best two-year-old that has raced in the Dominion this season, and much interest will be centred in his efforts in Australia (says the Herald). It is probable that he could have won the Great Northern Foal Stakes by a wider margin if he had been ridden right out to the end, and in twice defeating the brilliant Beaulivre he 'revealed distinct class and superiority. All going well with him after his arrival at Melbourne, the first race High Caste may be called upon to contest in Australia may be the Futurity Stakes, of £3OOO, weight-for-age with penalties and allowances, seven furlongs, at Caulfield on February 25. The race Is one that is seldom attempted by two-year-olds, and the last winner of that age was Palmer, by Pilgrim’s" Progress, who carried 5.12, having the benefit of an allowance and won from nine others in Imin 29isec. High Caste will be thoroughly tested if opposed to a horse of the class of Ajax, and a real line on his worth should be secured from his form in Melbourne. If his connections decide to miss the Futurity Stakes with him, there are several richly-endowed two-year-old races such as the V.R.C, and A.J.C. Sires Produce Stakes that should suil him.
