SAILING CHAMPIONSHIPS
THE IDLE ALONG CLASS ROSE MARIE LEADING WITH SIXTEEN POINTS (Per United Press Association) NELSON, Jan. 13, With three out of five races for the Idle'Along Championship completed, Rose Marie is leading with 16 points. Tornado being second with 12. Mayfair 11, Vagabond 9 and Marita 7. On sailing performances Wellington should have had 18 points for three wins, but in the re-sailed second event this morning Tornado was disqualified on a technicality for not being in the water sailing when the flags were raised five minutes before the start. The iudge’s report placing Rose Marie first, Vagabond second, and Mayfair third was adopted by the committee of delegates. Marita was sailing well when she struck a sandbank, damaging her boom and also the rudder stay, but repairs enabled her to start this afternoon. The fine seamanship of the Wellington crew was demonstrated in winning all the way both races to-day in a fresh southerly, The afternoon race resulted as follows: Tornado 1 Rose Marie .. .. ~ 2 Marita .. >. .. 3 Mayfair .. .. .. - • 4 Vagabond .. ..... 5 The event was an 11 miles’ one over a three-point course, and the time was Ihr 26min 32sec Marita was holding second place until turning for the final beat to the finishing line, when Rose Marie forced the Canterbury boat off the wind or the port tack, and then held her safely until the finish. Tornado has been definitely the superior boat so far in the contest, and will be unfortunate if the disqualification loses the contest for her.
