HIT BY TRAIN
CAR SMASHED AT CROSSING FOUR OCCUPANTS INJURED TWO IN SERIOUS CONDITION (Per United Press Association) HASTINGS, Jan. 13. Four young men had a remarkable escape from death when a car in which they were driving" was struck by a goods train on a railway crossing at Otane at 6.25 to-night. All four occupants were injured. Three were admitted to the Waipukurau Hospital, two in a very serious condition. The injured are; IVAN CONSTABLE, aged about 21, head injuries, lacerations, shock; condition very serious. J. SMITH, aged about 20, lacerations, head injuries, shock; condition very serious.
ROY SPARGO. aged about 21, head injuries, sprained wrist, concussion; condition, not serious.
REX MILLER, aged about 21, concussion, shock; condition not serious. He was not sent to hospital
The car was struck heavily by the engine, and after being carried 25 feet was thrown 15 feet from the line. Apparently Constable, who was driving, saw the oncoming train on his right and he swerved the car abruptly across the roadway in an effort to avoid a collision. The car, which was then on the line, met the locomotive in an almost headon crash. , , The car, a five-seater, was reduced to a tangled mass of wreckage. The wheels were tom off and the forepart severed from the chassis.
