BURRINJUCK DAM
RAPID DETERIORATION DANGER DURING FLOOD SYDNEY, Jan. 12. (Received Jan. 13, at 1.15 a.xn.) The Premier, Mr B. S. Stevens, announced that the Government was greatly concerned over > the rapid deterioration of Burrinjuck dam, in southern New South Wales, as disclosed by an overseas engineering expert’s report that the dam in major flood conditions would be a source of danger to the population in the immediate neighbourhood. The expert’s examination revealed that the concrete walls are in oroces of disintegration and remedial measures are urgently necessary, the cost of which would be in the vicinity of £1,750,000. The Cabinet, he added, had adopted the report, and work would be provided for upwards of 400 men for from five to seven years. The original capacity of the dam was 745,000 acre feet of water. Plans for the safety of persons who would be in the path of the dam if it burst had been prepared by the Government.
