Further details received in Auckland concerning the outbreak of fire on the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rimutaka in the South Pacific early this week reveal that a considerable amount of damage was caused to the cargo in the hold which was ablaze. The upper ’tween deck of No. 3 hold, the deck in which the fire started, is very seriously affected. The goods iii the lower tween deck and the main hold are also damaged, probably partly through fire and also through water and chemicals. The Rimutaka will arrive at Auckland from London to-morrow night on her first voyage in the service. She will berth on Saturday morning, when her 285 passengers will disembark. Cabled advice was received from London by the Auckland office of the New Zealand Shipping Company today stating that a general average of 10 per cent, had been declared on the cargo arriving by the Rimutaka consequent on the damage caused by the fire in No. 3 hold. The liner carries a heavy consignment ox cargo from London for discharge at Auckland and Wellington.
