CYCLONE AT PORT HEADLAND HOUSES WASHED AWAY PERTH, Jan. 12. An 80-mile-an-hour cyclone at Port Headland has raised such seas that many houses in the town have been washed away. The town, which was built in a low-lying area close to the sea. is now isolated. An urgent wireless appeal for assistance read: “ Headland surrounded by sea. The wind is increasing and the sea rising. Please endeavour to get a message to Broome, Perth, or anywhere possible.” This message was picked up by the Balfour Downs station late yes-, terday afternoon. SYDNEY WOOL SALES KEEN COMPETITION SYDNEY, Jan. 12. (Received Jan. 13, at 0.15 a.m.) At to-day’s wool sales competition was keen and general, resulting in full and satisfactory clearances. The market closed very firm and greasy merino made 25d. Of 12,352 bales offered. 11,280 were sold at auction and 1539 privately.
The Sun says wool is in a sound position statistically, although prices are lower than at this time last year, even allowing for yesterday’s 5 per cent. rise. Nearly 200,000 more bales have been sold in Australia during the first half of this selling season compared with the corresponding period of the previous season.
