WORKING MEN’S CLUB
♦ DEFINITE PROGRESS REPORTED A well-attended meeting of the Dunedin Working Men’s Club was held last night, the president (Mr G. Turnbull) being in the chair. A report on the work carried out since the last meeting was submitted by the secretary (Mr C. Parnell), who stated that definite progress was being made. The club’s finances were in a satisfactory state, and there were now 120 members. The secretary stated that the club’s rooms were open all day, and it was to be hoped that the members would make use of therm There was still a considerable amount of work to be done at the rooms, and he suggested that members with spare time should give their assistance. It was to be hoped that the club would soon have a billiard table. The secretary also suggested that members should bring to the club any magazines or books for which they had no further use, as the nucleus of a library was being built up A letter was received from the club’s solicitors setting out the steps which should be taken for the club to receive a charter. The letter also stated that the club was in the unusual position of being the first of its kind formed in New Zealand within 50 years Matters in connection with the holding of an official opening night were left in the hands of the committee, with the recommendation that the night should take the form of a social evening and that it should be held on a Saturday,
