INTERNATIONAL ATHLETES

TO-MORROW’S MEETING HANDICAPS DECLARED The stage is set for one of the most classic mile races to be seen in Dunedin at the Caledonian Ground tomorrow. when the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association will hold its meeting of international athletes. With three of the Empire’s most famous runners in V. P. Boot (New Zealand), G. D Backhouse (Australia) and W. A. C. Pullar (New Zealand) on the mark, a great race mav be expected. The race he had at Wellington last Saturday has done Backhouse a lot of good, and on Wednesday night at Oamaru he made a dynamic finish to win the Mile in 4min 25 l-ssec. good time under the conditions that were encountered. The race will probably provide a battle of wits, and it remains to be seen whether Boot will follow the same tactics as he did in Wellington of letting the others make the pace and then coming away ith his phenomenal burst at the finish, ft will not be surprising, if the day is right and ..he conditions favourable, to see R. A. Rose’s New Zealand record of 4min 13 3-ssec very closely approached, if not broken. Ted Best, the Empire Games athlete, is running at the top of his form, as may be gauged from the fact that in 10 starts he has had 10 wins since coming to New Zealand, and on Wednesday night at Camaru he equalled the New Zealand record of 9 4-ssec for 100 Yards and returned 22sec for a 220 Yards in which he was easing up at the finish. Miss Betty Eorbes. the Empire Games representative, is rapidly approaching form in the Women’s High Jump, in which she will compete, and A. A. Cameron, one of New Zealand’s best field athletes, will take part in the shot putt and discus events. R. Watson, the New Zealand champion walker, will also be a competitor. At 12.30 p.m. the three marathon representatives. G. L. Austin, C. G. Gibbons and G. R. Colston will contest the 20 Mile race.
