MILTON Farming Operations Owing to the unsettled weather, shearing operations have been very much prolonged. This is the worst season for shearing experienced for many years. Farmers have also experienced difficulty in hay-making operations. Most of the hay has been cut, but to get it dried is another matter. Turnip-thinning is proceeding', but the soggy nature of the ground is causing difficulty.

Cricket The Milton A team, to play Owaka in the first match of the third round of the South Otago Association’s fixtures at Milton to-morrow, will be as follows:—J. Kane. H. Wisely. H. Collings, J. Kerr, H. Heads. F. Bowie. A. Mackersey, R. Olver, W. Woods. L. Cotterill. and E. Currie. The second round of the B Grade competition will commence to-mor-row. The Milton B team, which will travel to play against Owaka B, will be as follows:—E. Olver, L. Wybrow, A. Heads, R. and G. Woods, W. Arbuckle, W. Stevenson, E. Marshall, K. and H. Calder, F. France.

Bowling The second round of the South Otago Bowling Association’s interclub fixtures will commence to-morrow, when the Milton and Stirling teams will travel to Kaitangata and the Balclutha teams will travel to play matches against Warepa. Lawrence, and Owaka. The three rinks from Milton Club to play Kaitangata will be as follows:—J. T. Wilson, M. Davanney, T. L. Floyd, P. Davanney: H. Wilson. R. Alexander, J. Cuff, J. Campbell; G. Clark. W. H. Hitchon, G. Smith, T. Clayton. A start has been made by Milton Club members with the Singles Championship and the Handicap Doubles for silver buttons. Personal Mr Robert S. Miller, of Dunedin, will conduct the morning and evening services at the Toko Presbyterian Church on Sunday. Mrs F. O’Regan is at present spending a few days’ holiday at Milton as the guest of Miss Lorna Burn. Circus and Zoo Although unfavourable weather prevailed on Wednesday night, there was a large attendance at Messrs Perry Bros.’ circus and zoo. The zoo was open for an hour during the afternoon. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Personal The Rev.‘L. A. Day. formerly minister of the Opawa Baptist Church, Canterbury, has arrived at Gore to take over the pastorate of the Gore Baptist i Church. Cricket I The Eastern Southland Senior and Junior Grade competition fixtures for to-morrow are as follows: Senior Grade.—Gore v. Pukerau. at Pukerau; Mataura v. Celtic, at Gore; Waikoikoi v. Heriot-Edievale. at Heriot; Wyndham v. Tapanui, at Tapanui. Junior Grade.—Celtic v. Mataura, at Mataura; Knapdale v. Wyndham, at Wyndham. Gore Town Clock The chiming and striking mechanism of the Gore town clock is again functioning, repairs having been effected

since the apparatus was put out of commission by earthquake shocks on the. morning of December 17. After the earthquake it was discovered that the large beam supporting the six striking and chiming hammers had been displaced, and the hammers were thrown out of alignment. While repairs were being effected the opportunity was taken to give the mechanism a complete overhaul, and the clock is now chiming much more clearly than before. Farewell Function

During his, eight years’ residence at Gore as stationmaster, Mr H. W. Pascoe, who is retiring from the service of the Railways Department to live at Christchurch, has taken an active interest in the affairs of the Gore District Angling Society, and in his official capacity as president over the past few years he has done much to further the work of the organisation. He was met by members of the society at the conclusion of the monthly meeting, .when the newly-elected president. Mr W. McKenzie.. oresented him with a solid leather suit case. Other speakers were Messrs A. Ferguson, F. Hoffman, J. Potts, A. Hoffman, H. B. Clifford, C. Giles, J. Hoffman. B. Parker, and K. F. Kershaw. Mr Pascoe suitably replied. Gore Fire Brigade

Since the formation of the Gore Fire Brigade 52 years ago, the head of the organisation has held the rank of captain, but in future he will hold the title of superintendent. This decision was reached at the monthly meeting of the brigade held prior to the annual meeting, it being agreed to change the designation of the office in conformity with other volunteer brigades in the Dominion.

The annual meeting was attended by a large number, of members, over whom Superintendent F. Wallis, jun., presided. The annual report recorded that the year had been uneventful as far as fires were concerned, the actual loss having been under £IOO. The Southern District Fire Brigades’ Association’s bi-annual demonstration had been held at Gore during Easter, and the brigade’s team, comprising A. Wallis, L. O. Wallis, E. F. Wallis. G. C. Allison, W. J. McKay, and A. McGregor had succeeded in retaining the championship shield, the Coulson Memorial Shield, and the HillsideTapley Cup. The activities of the brigade during the year were briefly reviewed by Superintendent Wallis, following which the annual report was adopted. The following officers were elected:—Superintendent, F. Wallis, jun.; deputy superintendent, J. A. Wallis; senior foreman. H. G. Wallis; station foreman. L. O. Wallis; secretary, L. O. Wallis; auditor, D. F. Tait; fire police corps, Sergeant D. F. Tait. Corporal A. N. Stevenson; policemen—G. Ritchie, F. Steel. W. Williams, and E. Eastwood Social Committee—Fireman W. G. Smith, G. C. Allison, A. McGregor, and E. Henderson. The following service honours were presented:—Five-year service medal, Fireman A. McGregor; two-year silver bars—Firemen A. M. Ussher, C. H. Matthews, and L. G. Thomson.
