ANOTHER EIGHTEEN VICTIMS
MOTORISTS TRAPPED IN CARS MELBOURNE, Jan. 11. (Received Jan. 11. at 11 p.m.) Eighteen more people were burned to death in Victorian bush fires to-day, bringing the total to 20 since the fires started during the week-end. At least 10 others are missing. Seven persons speeding along a blazing bush track near Narbethong were trapped in motor cars and burned to death. The remaining 11 lost their lives in the Rubicon area. The worst forest and bush fires in South Australian history are, ravaging districts close to the metropolis. It is feared that . two men and three women perished at Macclesfield, 28 miles from Adelaide. Fires are burning over an area of 100 square miles. Four racehorses were burned to death at Gumaracha, where the damage caused is estimated at £SOOO. HEAT WAVE CONTINUES MANY PEOPLE COLLAPSE SYDNEY, Jan. 11. (Received Jan. 12, at 0.5 a.m.) Trying heat in the metropolitan area caused the collapse of more than 30 people, including 11 men on road works at Lidcombe, a suburb, and 13 at Parramatta, where a temperature of 112 degrees was recorded. Windsor, 15 miles west of Sydney, recorded 122 and Pennant Hills 112. Poultry farmers lost 150 fowls by death within an hour.
