THE FRENCH NAVY

BUILDING PROGRAMME ADDITIONS ANNOUNCED TWO BATTLESHIPS INCLUDED (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) PARIS, Jan. 10. The Minister of Marine (M. Campinchi) announced an additional naval programmme of two battleships, one cruiser, seven submarines, and 24,000 tons in auxiliary vessels, supplementing the two aircraft carriers, one cruiser, six destroyers, and five submarines announced recently. He declared that the battleships would not exceed 35,000 tons, but emphasised that a strong fleet was a question of life and death. Britain was a precious ally, but the British and French fleets each had its own job in wartime, and it was impossible to ask Britain to assume the protection of French communications. M. Campinchi added that the naval tonnages of France, Italy, and Germany at present were 500,000, 450,000, and 170,000 respectively, and the tonnages under construction in France, Italy, and Germany were 120,000, 150,000, and 250,000 respectively. GERMAN PRESS COMMENT "NAVAL ARMAMENTS RACE" BERLIN, Jan. 10.
