AUSTRALIAN C.I.D. REPRESENTATIVE EVIDENCE AT BOW STREET (From Our Own Correspondent) (By Air Mail) LONDON, Dec. 21. In a case which was begun yesterday and adjourned, Detective Clement MgGrath, of the Adelaide C.1.D., who gave evidence at Bow street, had travelled 11,000 miles from Australia to do so. Before Mr McKenna was Rupert Gordon Russell, aged 40, an engineer's assistant, of Philbeach Gardens, Earl's Court, charged on an extradition warrant with the fraudulent conversion of £19,140 in Commonwealth Treasury Bonds and shares of Miller Anderson, Ltd., the property of Allen Doolette Anderson, of South Australia. Detective McGrath stated that he had brought a warrant and other papers relating to the case from South Australia. Russell had appeared on the charge at Adelaide until he absconded from his bail. Replying to Mr A. C. Prothero, defending. McGrath said he had no doubt about Russell's identity, although he had lost a couple of stone in weight. Mr Prothero: Do you suspect that other people are concerned in this matter? —I do suspect that Russell has not received the full benefit of the amount charged. Was he the mug?—He might have been taken advantage of bv others. He mentioned that he has been to America to try to find these people. Were the bonds sold by him or by somebody else?—l know they did not reach the Bank of New Zealand through Russell. They were negotiated after his arrest. Detective Inspector Spooner, of Scotland Yard, gave evidence that on December 13 Russell, then in the cells, said he wanted to admit he was Rupert Gordon Russell. He had previously denied it.
