Mr W. H. Carson, who has been on a holiday visit to Australia, returned to Dunedin yesterday. Dr A. S. Moody has returned to Dunedin after spending the Christmas and New Year holidays at Queenstown. Mr J. G. Barclay, MP. for Marsden, was a passenger by the mid-day express for the north yesterday. He proposed to break his journey at Timaru.

Mr N. L. F. Wood, who has been manager of the Ashburton branch ol Messrs Hallenstein Bros, for nearly 18 years, has been transferred to Dunedin and will take up his duties here early in February. He will be succeeded at Ashburton by Mr Kelleher, of Hokitika.

Our London correspondent, writing on December 21, says that Lord Rothermere has made tentative arrangements to travel to New Zealand by the Dominion Monarch, which will leave England on its maiden voyage on a ebruary 17. Lord Rothermere is at present travelling on the Continent. He will not return to London until early in February.

Our London correspondent reports that Mr Denis V. Dowling, of Dunedin, who is a student of singing and pianoforte at the Royal College of Music, has been awarded the Henry Blower prize for singers, and he has had his opera exhibition renewed for two terms to July, 1939. The Royal College awards are made known on December 21.

Northbound passengers by Union Airways yesterday morning were Messrs H. V. Sincock and P. Schfiber for Christchurch, Miss M. Mills for Wellington, and Mr P. McGhee foi Palmerston North. Southbound passengers by the afternoon plane were Messrs D. J. Wesney and A. Smilhe from Auckland, Mr Wilson Hull from Wellington, and Messrs D. J. Miller. W. Harris, and Miss B. Johnston from Christchurch.

The following New Zealanders m the Royal Air Force, acting pilot officers on probation, are confirmed in their appointments and graded as pilot officers, all from December 6:—W. S. Brown (Christchurch), C. G.■Christophers (Wellington). B. W. McMUlan (Stratford), D. N. Milligan (Wellington), J. R. M. Stewart (Eltham), K. W. Trigance (Timaru), and K. U Young (Oamaru). Mr H W. Piper, formerly supervisor of new'business in New Zealand for the Australian Mutual Provident Society, with headquarters in Wellington, has been appointed branch manager for the society in Queensland. The appointment dates from January 1. Mr H. S. Beaumont will succeed Mr Piper as new business supervisor of the society in New Zealand.

At the recent primary examination for the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England the following New Zealanders were approved in the subjects of anatomy and physiology:—D. A. Arnott, M. 8., Ch.B., N.Z. (Otago and University College); R. D. N. Bisset, M.B, Ch.B., N.Z. (Otago and Middlesex); E. H. Clarke, MB Ch. 8.. N.Z. (Otago); and F. h. Hutter, M. 8., Ch.B., N.Z. (Otago and University College). A farewell was tendered by memhpr<; nf the Otago Land Board at the conclusion of yesterday's business to the chairman &r F. H Waters), who will leave Dunedin on January 24 to take up his duties as deputy valuergeneral in the Lands Department at Wellington. Mr C. J. Inder made the presentation of a decanter service, ai.d expressed the regret of members at Mr Waters's departure, while at the same time congratulating him upon his appointment. Messrs D. J. Ross, J S. Adams, and C. W. Stuart endorsed the remarks of Mr Inder, and Mr D. McLennan, an ex-member of the board, also associated himself with the farewell Mr Waters has been chairman of the board and commissioner of Crown lands at Dunedin for the past two years. ■
