Barometers have risen rapidly in the southern Tasman Sea. Indications are for:— Winds.— Moderate to strong gene rally and of gale force in many places from Taranaki and Hawke s Bay south wards, westerlies -to north-westerlies prevailing at first, but a south-wester y change advancing rapidly from the S °Seas—New Zealand waters: Rather rough north of Cape Egmont and very rough in places thence southwards and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, moderate in coastal waters on the east coast. Eastern Tasman Sea: Winds north-westerly at first in the central and northern portions, but soutnwesterlies advancing from the south: force moderate in the north, with moderate seas, but otherwise of gale force at times, with rough seas. Weather. Changeable, with showers at times in most districts, but fewer in eastern and northern portions of the North Island than elsewhere; temperatures becoming colder, with hail probable in the south and snow on the ranges. WEATHER IN DUNEDIN The weather in Dunedin yesterday was sultry and at times threatening, heavy banks of clouds passing across the sky at intervals until the midafternoon. when conditions showed an improvement. The weather to-day was cloudy, with a strong westerly wind, and the maximum temperature was 75deg. The barometric pressure fell slightly, and the reading at 5 p.m. was 29.90 in. WELLINGTON. Jan. 9. The weather was dull and cold, with drizzling rain between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., the fall registering being ,06m. The wind rose to a squally north-west gale during the afternoon. The minimum temperature last night was 52.8 deg and the maximum 10-day 60.2 deg. At 3.30 the barometer reading was 29.498 in. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan 9.
