Dunedin Cup Meeting The programme for the Dunedin Cup meeting is in circulation, and owners will have ample time to con it over before nominations close on January 25. ■, ■; > j' Avenger The A.J.C. Derby winner, Avenger, knuckled over in his last race and dislocated his off fore fetlock. He started favourite, and was going through near the furlong post when he fell. Oratory Oratory is said to have been somewhat backward in condition when raced at the Manawatu meeting. If - that is so, she should represent danger at the Wellington Cup meeting. Ajax Mr Neil Newman, who instigated an offer being made for Ajax, has disclosed that the effort to purchase Ajax has been abandoned, due, to a price of £50,000 being set on “ They wanted half of the United States Mint," he said. “We concluded they did - not want to sell, and have dropped negotiations." Bel Oiseau

They were not entertaining an angel unawares when Bel Oiseaii won the Juvenile Stakes at Randwick on December 31, as she started a short-priced favourite in a field of 13. was bred and owned by Mr W. Higgins, and got by Beau Pere from Joybird, an imported mare by ArgosyAlmond, by Lomond. Increased Accommodation

The Wellington Racing Club is- improving the car parking accommodation. at Trentham by the provision of a further parking area. This will have an entrance from Ararino road, just north of the railway station. The new area will run from there, adjacent to the railroad, to a point parallel with the end of Ararino road. It is about the same width as the present public parking area running between the railroad and Ararino road from Camp road to the station, but longer This added accommodation will meet the parking demands at Trentham for many years.

A Good Idea Although the sale ring at Trentham Is one of the largest in Australia and New Zealand, the sales annually attract such tremendous crowds that u is always most difficult to secure seating accommodation. To quite a considerable extent this is due to the pushfulness of the younger generation and small fry. In order to try and cope with this, the managers of the sales have decided this year to institute a similar system to that in vogue in Australia, where an entrance fee is charged to the sales. The daily charge in Australia for entry to the sales is 2s 6d each person. The New Zealand charge for the yearling sales is to be Is per head. Entry will be free to the second days sale. When the yearling sales were held in Christchurch a charge of admission was always made, and the proceeds devoted to charity. A Warning Note

In past years quite a number of racing men in New Zealand have purchased yearlings in Australia for racing purposes. Last year thes,. reached record numbers, prices extending up to four figures being paid. Buyers of high-class lots in Australia last were Messrs W. Higgins, W. H. Gaisford, R. T. Reid, H. Bailey etc. It would .seen, from the present trend of affairs that it is most unlikely New Zealand buyers will be able t make purchases at the Australian sales next Easter as far as buying yearlings for racing purposes is concerned. How ever, with a record entry at the national sales af Trentham probably all local requirements will be well pre vided for No doubt nothing will be put in the way of breeders to prevent them from making purchases of brood mares in Australia as. of course, ,t will be recognised in official circles that the breeding industry in New Zealand is a very valuable one. and should be encouraged. The same policy will no doubt apply to the importation of stallions for stud purposes. Past buyers at the Australian sales would be wel 1 advised to make themselves fully conversant with the local position before their opportunity to purchase at Trentham passes by. Royal Flavour Amongst the brood mares booked to go under the hammer at the Elderslie Stud sale is Royal Flavour, the dam of La Vie, who displayed good winning form at the Auckland Cup meeting.: Royal Flavour was bred to produce: stayers She was got by Claro froth Forest Witch, by Linacre—Bewitch, by Birkenhead—-Witchet, by Sir Lancelot —Elflock, by Nordenfeldt —Elfin, by Musket—Sylvia, by Fisherman—Juliet. The Juliet taproot has been one of the greatest producing lines in the Stud Book. Martini-Henry, who won the Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup, gave it a 1 oost into fame, and a few tracing to thx same source include such very notable horses, as Nordenfeldt* (Victoria Derby and A.J.C. Derby)*, Expksion Gold Jrest. Robinson Crusoe, First Water, Golds borough, and other high-class performers. At the break-up of the New Zealand Stud Company, Nordenfeldt was - sold ■to the late Mr S. Hordern at the then great price of 5600m5.

Bulawayo Some good bargains have been secured at the annual sales of the Elderslie Stud yearlings, and one of them was secured when the hammer fell on Bulawayo at 30gns. Bulawayo had a rather remarkable career, as he won amongst the ponies and also in good handicap company during the same season. As a four-year-old Bulawayo won the Timaru Handicap, of one mile and a-quarter, and, going up north, won the Pony Cup and Ponv Handicap at Ellerslie and a Pony Cup run at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting. He came south again and won the Naseby Cup. the Dunedin Cup. of £SOO. and the Great Autumn Handicap, of £750. and later he won the Ashburton Cup. altogether proving him a great bargain and one of the best of his inches that ever raced in New Zealand. Bargains Stepdancer cost 270gns as a yearling. She won the Dunedin Cup in 1906 and 1907, and at the stud produced Stardancer (d.h. Stewards’ Handicap). Warstep (Stewards’ Handicap, d.h. New Zealand Cup, Dunedin Cup. Auckland Cup, Trentham Gold Cup. Canterbury Cup. Great Autumn Handicap. McLean Stakes. James Hazlett Gold Cup). Wardancer (Dunedin Guineas), Wariove (New Zealand Oaks). Stardancer produced Starland (Auckland Cup), Limelight (Members’ Handicap, Metropolitan Handicap. Jockey Club Handicap. Great Autumn Handicap). Starmist (New Zealand Oaks), Paperchase. etc. Warstep produced Footfall (Dunedin Cup) and fillies that will, no doubt, keep her name alive. Wariove produced Amor and Spoon, and even this brief refernece to Stepdancer shows that she was a great bargain at 270gns, Another good bargain was picked up when the Elderslie-bred Grand Opera sold at 40gns as a yearling. Grand Opera produced Soldier’s Chorus (Invercargill Cup, 2, etc.), Tannhauser (Dunedin Cup, Metropolitan Handicap. , etc.). •Cherubini (Great Northern Derby. New Zealand Derby, Canterbury Cup, Australian Cup), Rossini (New Zealand DerbsO, and fillies that should carry on the line. Soldier’s Chorus did not win any great race of note except the Criterion Handicap, which he won after a good race in the New Zealand Cup.

Menschikoff Menschikoff, one of the most successful two-year-olds ever raced in New Zealand, was bred at the Elderslie Stud, and cost the late Mr G. G. Stead the bargain price of 210gns. As a two-year-old, Menschikoff started 15 times and won 11 races, scoring seven consecutive wins. He made his debut in the Welcome Stakes, when another Elderslie-bred youngster in Indian Queen slipped the field and beat Menschikoff and Cruciform and several others. Menschikoff won the juvenile Plate on the second day of the meeting from Formosan and Indian Queen, He again beat Indian Queen in the Electric Plate. Then came a win in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Renown beat Menschikoff in the Royal Stakes. Then came a run of seven wins in the Wellesley Stakes (again beating Indian Queen), Wellington Stakes, Middle Park Plate, Champion Plate, Dunedin Champagne Stakes,Railway Plate (10.0), and Wingatui Stakes. Cruciform, in the same colours, finished in front of Menschikofl in' the Canterbury Champagne Stakes and Challenge Stakes, and he wound up the season by beating Nonette in the Wellington Challenge Stakes. Menschikoff won £2515 as a two-year-old, and was beaten by bad luck in the Welcome Stakes, and on two other occasions by a stable mate. As a three-year-old Menschikoff started four times without defeat. He won the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, the New Zealand Derby. Canterbury Cup, and Great Northern Derby, and increased his total winnings; by £1775.

Beau Pere The Son-in-Law stallion. Beau Pere, has had rather an unlucky reason so far this year: In tne New Zealand Derby, three of his first season’s progeny—Beaupartir, Peerless, and Gay Son —finished second, third, and fourth, and similarly in the Great Northern Derby Beaupartir and Peerless were again second and third. Peerless is. of course, the best of her sex, and she has put up. some solid performances since she scored in the New Zealand Oaks. In any average year, with three representatives of the quality of the three-year-olds named. Beau Pere would have been credited with both Derbies, as well as the Oaks, but the Beau Pere classic representatives have bumped against a real champion in Defaulter. Seven of the present season’s crop of two-year-olds by Beau Pere have already scored, three in New Zealand —Beaulivre, Beau Repaire, and Tableau—and four in Australia— Beaucaire, Good Morning Beau Mari, and Bel Oiseau—and the two first-named at least should develop into high-class three-year-olds. It will be interesting to note how buyers will view the third crop of yearlings by this high-quality sire, as these will be the last of his stock to-be bred in the Dominion meanwhile Of the 10 yearlings by Beau Pere coming up at the National Sales, four are colts out of Amante, by Chief Ruler, Barbacan, by Top Gallant (dam of Taurangi) Zarisee, by Paladin, and Vervain, by Weathervane. Amante it very closely related to the dam of Amigo and Vervain is a half-sister to the dam of Globe Trotter, The Allies by Beau Pere include two closely related on the dam's side to Admiral Drake and Francis Drake, these being out of Duck’? Egg. by Absurd from Tame Duck, and Love Set, by Captain Bunsby from Duck’s Egg. Another is out of Enchantment, by Hunting Song (the dam of Red Witch and Sternchase Melissa, by Absurd and the dam of Merial, has also a Beau Pere filly, as has Seeadler. by Lackhatn, This latter mare is closely related to the Mitchelson Cup winner. Seatown Blamll’ord Line

It is interesting to note that another son of Blandford, in Harinero, has made a successful start at the stud in New South Wales with his first crop of two-year-olds. Harinero was undoubtedly the best-performed son of Blandford to come to this part of the world. He has already been credited with three winners. He won both the Irish Derby and St. Leger, and is an own brother to the English Derby winner Trigo. His dam, Athasi, is by Farasi, . son of Desmpnd, sc is very similarly bred to Solicitor General, whose dam is also by a son of Desmond. Solicitor General, whc is credited with being more like his sire than any of his sons that have been brought to this part jf the world, comes from a family which has been wonderfully successful in producin sires both, here and in overseas countries. T is is the great Paraffin family, which is now credited with no less than 22 winners of the English classics. Solicitor General is to be represented by his first crop of yearlings at the national sales this rront’ In view of the success of the young sons of Blandford, great interest is sure to be taken in the young Rlderslie sire’s first crop. An outstanding colt by him is out of the English mare Sweet Charity, the gran dam of Bar an.

who is also by a son of Blandford. Another grand colt by him is out of the Tea Tray mare Gobble. Her first two to race are winners. She is out of Fulsome, an own sister to Praise, and, of course, comes from the great tgproot mare Eulogy. Another Solicitor General colt is out of the Australian-bred mare Homedale, who won the Moonee Valley Cup and other good handicaps there. This mare is by Rossendale, a famous sire whose daughters have produced noted winners in England and Australia and also in the Dominion The fillies by Solicitor General are to be sold at the dispersal sale of the Elderslie Stud next Thursday, January 12, where, of course, Solicitor General, who is also to be sold as the result of the liquidation of the Elderslie Stud, Ltd., will be one of the main attractions. Hawke’s Bay Trainer

Exceptionally pleasing results were secured by the Hawke’s Bay trainer S. J. Reid, with his team of five young horses during the holiday racing, and the stable should finish the season with a high average of successes. In her only two starts, Kathbella won at Awapuni and Hastings: Ivar, after running second to Amigo ai the Manawatu meeting, scored in open company at Hastings, where also Kobi was successful on the second day Imogen, Kobi’s half-sister, gained a winning bracket at Waipukurau and was placed at Hastings. Halley was also placed at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. Brunhild, Nora Gregor and Yogi, a brother to Peerless. are expected to reinforce the stable for autumn racing.
