NAZI ACTIVITIES

INCIDENTS IN CANADA PROTEST AGAINST BROADCAST OTTAWA. Jan. 6. (Received Jan. 7, at 6.30 p.m.) Nazi activities are claiming attention in two centres in Canada. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has announced that numerous protests have been received against a New Year broadcast from the capital by Herr Eric Windels, German Consul-general, including the statement, “ We are thankful for all our Fuhrer has accomplished in the past vear. We are sure you will remain faithful to German tradition and culture.” At Winnipeg the Catholic Archbishop, Dr Sinnott. replied to the criticism of Herr Wilhelm Roedde, Western German Consul, who objected to the archbishop’s Christmas sermon, containing the following; “ In Germany this year if the people obey the rulers they_ will have to celebrate Christmas without Christ.’ The consul, denying this, demanded a retraction, and the archbishop, replying. quoted the News Service s text of the order by the Nazi National Socialist Party, alleging that yule was older than Christianity, and Christmas was borrowed from Germanic tradition. The archbishop, remarking that it was unusual to meet criticism from a stranger in this country, asserted that, unlike Germany, it was customary in Canada to extend courtesy to the clergv. No one was surprised by the Nazi anti-Christmas order, which was really in keeping with Germany’s abominable treatment of Christianity and clergymen.
