CORNWELL CUP

DECREASED ENTRIES OTAGO THE ONLY SOUTHERN CREW TAKAPUNA CLASS LESS POPULAR (Special ro Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 27. The challengers for the Cornwell Cup yacht races, which will be held at Plimmerton on January 14, include only one South Island crew. They will represent the Otago Yacht and Motor Club. Last year 11 ports were represented in the contest, including a crew from Suva. Christchurch and Lyttelton, which were also represented, will not be competing this year. This year’s challengers are Plimmerton, Wellington, Parcmata, Auckland, Tauranga, Manukau, and Otago. T. S. Camp (skipper) and W. A. Carrington (forward hand) will represent Otago, according to Mr W. A. Cameron, vice-president of the Otago Club, who is visiting Christchurch. Both these boys have shown superior seamanship throughout the series of trial races held in Otago Harbour. Of seven races sailed, Camp succeeded in winning three. He was disqualified in one other race after winning it. In another, he held a lead of three minutes when the mast broke, and, in a race which was recalled after the expiration of time, he held a lead of Ih. minutes. The trials were conducted strictly under contest rules. “We place a lot of confidence in these boys, not only as our representatives, but, in the circumstances, as representatives of the South Island,” said Mr Cameron. It is said that the reason for the apparent lack of interest by the South Island clubs in the contest is because the Takapuna class of boat which is used in the Cornwell Cup races is losing popularity and being replaced by boats of the Idlealong* class. In a race held by the Canterbv Club at Lyttelton recently. 22 Idlealong class boats actually started and there are only two or three of the other class of boat in the club. Similar conditions obtain in the Christchurch Club.
