HOLIDAY RACING

CONCLUDING DAY AT WINGATUI NIGHT WINGS SUCCESSFUL AGAIN LADY LEIGH BEATS TOP ROW FAREWELL HANDICAP TO THERMIDOR

The weather conditions were quite favourable for the concluding day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting, and quite a good attendance witnessed the sport provided by the second card. The going changed from a sloppy softness to a sticky and holding state of affairs, and had an influence on the form displayed. It was noticeable that horses going well along the turfy back stretch commenced to drift and fade after rounding the far turn, where the nature of the track commences to change.

Atua Here, Remembo, and Great Baby were the first to show out from a great start and at the far turn Atua Here was still in charge from Neptune, who had moved up Just ahead of Remembo and Great Baby. Atua Here increased its lead going along the bottom stretch and turned for home well clear of Remembo, who was closely followed by Great Baby Boloyna and Pilot’s Love! In the run home Atua Rere stayed on to win easily by five lengths from Great Baby, who finished four lengths in front of Pilot’s Love. Boloyna was fourth. Time, Imin 24sec.

The card provided good sport, and the club was extremely unlucky that unusually bad weather prior to the meeting debarred, it from being a much greater success than what actually proved the case. The management, under Mr L. G. Hill, was again up to a high standard, and the honorary officials contributed to the enjoyment of participation in the racing.

Rounding the turn Roseman was two lengths clear of the field, and the order was unchanged going along- the bottom stretch. As they turned for home Roseman was still in charge by two lengths from Moneyless, with Lady Leigh next. Lady Leigh ran to the front after entering the straight, and came on to win by -two lengths from Top Row, who came with a fast run to beat Roseman for second money by three lengths. The order was unchanged at the far turn, with Ponty and Queen of Song lying handy. Going along the bottom stretch Valantua was two lengths clear of Petersham, with Araboa, Ponty, Queen of Song and Night Wings next. Valantua led Petersham, Ponty and Araboa into the straight, but once straightened up for home Night Wings came through and wore down Valantua to win by two lengths. Araboa was three lengths behing Valantua and Ponty was a similar distance away fourth. Time. Imin 50sec. FERNHILL HANDICAP, Of £l5O. second horse £2O. third £lO. Seven furlongs. 7/7—Astral Flash, Messrs J. S. and W. E. Hazlett’s b m. by Colonel Cygnus—Flicker, 4yrs. car. 7.0 (J. J. L. Strathern) .. .. t 1/I—Gusto, Mr H. A. McDonald’s ch g, 8.4 (J. W. Dawson’s bm. 8.0 (P. W. Powell) ~ . 0 Gusto got the worst of the start and the early leaders were Adina, Astral Flash and Dissemble. The order was the same at the far turn, and racing along the bottom stretch Astral Flash drew up to show the way to Adina, Peacock, Dissemble and Gusto. Astral Flash was first into the straight from Peacock, who was closely attended by Dissemble, Gusto and Elmarch. In the run home Astral Flash held on to win by three lengths from Gusto, who beat Elmarch by a head for second place. Peacock was fourth. Time. Imin 39sec.

Sir Rosenor carried the field along in the Taieri Hurdles, but struck the hurdle at the six-furlong post, and after rounding the far turn McHeath went to the front, and, stalling off King Willow, beat him by a neck. Atua Rere was apparently a muchimproved horse as a result of his race on the first day, as he had the finish of the Novice Handicap to himself.

Montessa looked a winner as they straightened up for home in the Juvenile Handicap, but in the final furlong Gold Salute ran to the front and won well. A good finish for second place resulted in Blissful Lady beating Night Pal by a head, with Montessa a neck away. More energy on Montessa at the finish might have resulted in second place. Lady Leigh was regarded as a*good bet for the Grand Stand Handicap, and she won. but had to be kept busy to keep clear of Top Row, who again ran a good race. Roseman faded after leading into the straight, and High Glee, after losing four or five lengths at the start, finished fourth.

The betting was evenly placed on the St. Andrew’s Handicap. Valantua led out and shewed the way to the straight, where the rather confidently ridden Night Wings) after handing away a start of several lengths to the leaders, drew up to win going away by two lengths from Valantua, who beat Araboa by two lengths. Ponty was close up fourth. Astral Flash ran to the front early in the Fernhill Handicap, and led Dissemble and Peacock into the straight. Astral Flash won all out from Gusto, who stayed on and was second, a neck In front of Elmarch. Peacock faded Into fdbrth place after being second down the running. Toro Koura’s saddle slipped during the race. Norseman was backed to a shade under evens for the Allanton Handicap. He established a good lead after being slow away, and led into the straight, Passalorm, who drifted in the early part, warmed up to his work, and in another few strides would have won. An earlier call on Passaform might have resulted in the defeat of the favourite. The card and the meeting were coneluded by Thermidor winning the Farewell Handicap by a good margin from Straightdell. Gay Vixen made the early running, but then faded out. The totalisator handled £22,348 (win £10,452, place £11,896), making a total for the meeting of £44,603. compared with £39,803 10s last year. At the far turn Slayer dropped back, and as they raced along the bottom stretch McHeath and King Willow moved up to join Sir Rosenor and Superex in the . lead. Norseman led Nightdress into the straight, and then Passaform came through with a fast run and challenged the leader at the distance. Norseman hung on to win by half a length. Passaform finished four lengths ahead of Nightdress, who was three lengths in front of Seafox. Time. Imin 37sec. FAREWELL HANDICAP, Of £175; second horse £25, third £lO. The High-weight Handicap saw a runaway win for Boatsong, who cleared out from his opponents. The favourite, Lone Raider, beat the rest, but he had no chance of overhauling the winner. Globe Trotter was responsible for a very solid effort in winning the Two-year-old Race. In on the fence behind the leaders, he was awkwardly placed a 5 they turned into the straight and had to be pulled right out. Once clear, he overhauled the leaders, Military Maid and Duncannon, to win going away in brilliant style. Military Maid and Duncannon were always there, but Beau Vite finished on for fourth. The Apprentices’ Race presented no difficulty to the favourite, Ruatiti. Mimicry made the pace, and was clear into the straight, but had no chance once Ruatiti put in his claim Yed Prior finished over the others for, third. The winner is on the improve.

Te Hai surprised at a double-figure price in the Wood Handicap, but he won well after following the pacemaker, Sporting Gift, to the straight. This pair then virtually had the race to themselves, although the field was closing on them at the end. The favourite, Royal Star 11, was unlucky. He lost a good deal of ground at the start, and with ordinary luck he would have won. Alunga ran a better race to the straight, but he did not go on with it.

Corroboree was the winner ot the Liverpool Handicap all the way. He went to the front from the start and setting' a good pace ran on too well for all his opponents. Happy Landing, who got chopped back at the start, went after him fairly early, and although he looked likely as they came into the straight he weakened again at the end, and went under for second to Argentic, who finished on solidly from the back. Rustem also finished very well for his fourth placing. Gay Chou had every chance and the others were never dangerous. Royal Choice won narrowly but solidly in the Champion Hack and he would have been very unlucky to lose as he received more than one check in the running. Colincamps made all the pace and nearly succeeded in hanging on, being caught by Royal Choice and Ruling Spi only at the finish. Yours Truly did the best of the others.

Black Thread repeated his first day’s performance in the Open Sprint by leading practically all the way in the Kawau Handicap, but he only just scraped home $t the finish from Counterblast. Counterblast would have won had she delayed her run a little later as she tended to hang out with the pace on at the turn. Laughing Lass weakened at the finish after being with Black Thread early. Phalanx was responsible for a fine effort in the concluding event, for he did not get away we]l and had a good deal of ground to make up. Sigurd looked the winner when he beat_ the pacemaker Copycat into the straight, but Phalanx finished just too solidly for him. Saki was backed, but was never dangerous. Gold Salute Gold Salute broke it for a win in the Juvenile Handicap after running well in better company. Astral Flash A 71b allowance helped Astral Flash to win the Fernhill Handicap, as she had nothing to spare beyond her winning margin. Passaform Passaform was finishing on better than Norseman in the Allanton Handicap, but a late run cost a good chance of a win. Thermidor

Thermidor stayed on best in the sticky going when sent out for the Farewell Handicap, and the manner in which she won surprised some of her regular supporters.

Royal Style Royal Style was sprinted three furlongs after the racing was concluded yesterday, but did not create any enthusiasm by the gallop. Recollection

Recollection will make a good hurdler with more experience. The heavy state of the going at Wingatul accentuated the strength and height of the hurdles, and cost him a good chance of winning.

Night Wings Nigln Wings confirmee her first day’s winning fornr at Wingatui by winning again when saddled up for the St. Andrew’s Handicap. Her rider rode a rather too confident race, and gave away a good start over the final hree furlongs instead of being in a handy position at that stage of a race. A big risk is taken when a substantial lead has to be recovered when the pace becomes improved at the business end of a race. Why lose ground when the pace is slow? At A'aikouaiti

It j« officially staled that the going at Waikouaiti will be quite good, despite rumours to the contrary. The course quickly sheds any surface water.

A Compliment Atua Rere, the half-brother to Palermo, who won yesterday at Wingatui, marked a tribute to J Dooley’s horsemanship, *3 a change of riders represented about four times as much support as he carried on the first day.

Chirp Chirp slightly strained herselt when galloping prior to the Wingatui meeting, and hence did not fulfil her engagements. The trouble may not prove serious.

Winton Juvenile Stakes Ned Worthy’s third placing at Wairio has brought him into favour for the Winton Juvenile Stakes, but the chances of Icilma and Jack Bond will also be seriously considered. Jack Bond has improved since his Wairio race, and J. McLennan’s representative may be the hardest to beat on the day. He is a well-mannered youngster, a clean pacer and a good stayer.

Auckland Cup History Like most great races, the Auckland Trotting Cup has an aura of romance. It might fairly be stated that, even in its infancy, the Cup was not without piquancy. For instance, away back in 1894. when the fourth of its kind was run, Tom Hicks, the winner, was so little thought of by the handicapper that he was conceded 75 seconds start from the scratch horse. The race was run over three miles in those days, and if Tom Hicks had been rated on the present system he would have had 900yds start, or 600yds over two miles, the distance of the Cup race to-day. What a Day!

There was probably no worse Auckland Trotting Cup day in the matter of weather than in the year Admiral Wood won. That was in 1916. It was terrible —frightening. When the horses were on the track for_ the Cup hail came down in torrents, lightning darted hither and thither the elements thundered, and the heavens wept copiously—the dirt track was turned into a quagmire. “ Scotty ” Bryce had two horses in the race, and he took the drive on Childsdale. who became a redhot favourite, the reins of Admiral Wood being given to A. J. Julian, former dashing rider across country and now astute trainer to Mr R. T. Reid, the Waikato sportsman. And what a race! Childsdale was out by himself in front as the field raced across the top stretch to the straight for the run home. His innumerable supporters were feeling their totalisator tickets in gleeful anticipation, when, 10, the favourite slipped badly in the mud, went to a break, and before Bryce could' get him to settle down again Admiral Wood had flashed by to win.
