DELUGE IN SYDNEY

o ACCOMPANIED BY GALE A NUMBER OF CASUALTIES MANY HOUSES UNROOFED SYDNEY, Dec. 23. A tropical storm, accompanied by a gale, this evening deluged the city and caused damage in the suburbs aggregating £200,000. The roofs of 140 houses were blown off at Marrickville and St. Peter's. A youth was killed by lightning while bathing at Cronulla. The storm lasted only five minutes, bu/t 60 persons were injured, nine seriously. About 100 houses and two factories were unroofed in the western suburbs. Several buildings were demolished, and in many cases furniture was smashed to pieces. The damage is confined to a strip about a quarter of a mile wide.
