AN IMPRESSIVE WIN NELSON EDDY PROMISING (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH. Dec. 26. After heavy rain during the night the sun shone all day for the Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting. The track was slow, and though the racing provided -'nterest there was much more breaking than usual in some of the •vents. The Mitcham Handicap attracted a field of 19 unhoppled trotters, but it was a poor race, most of them breaking at some stage of the journey. Beethoven and Co-director led early from Native Ruler, Paddy's Harvest and Bush Laddie, but in the third half mile Bush Laddie joined Beethoven in the lead, with Lord Ernleigh, Native Ruler, and Paddy's Harvest next. Great Linnet moved ud a little further on. Bush Laddie led to the straight, and won from Great Linnet, while Fire King, after losing a lot of ground, was going well at the finish in third place, Co-director. Lord Ernleigh. Beethoven, and Paddy's Harvest were next. The winner was about the only horse in the race to go steadily. He Is a three-year-old by Wrack, and looks good. The Wakanui Handicap, for which there were 25 starters, was in divisions. In the first Joan Grattan soon took charge from Chatmos and Drumcree, with Pursuit, Great Ayora and Braw Lass handy. Joan Grattan held her

place in front to the straight, when she tired. Chatmos took charge over a furlong from the post, and beat Drumcree by three lengths. Braw Lass was two lengths away, while Joan Grattan and Pursuit headed the others Chatmos, an aged Wrack gelding, is a •son of Lady Superior, dam of Cardinal Logan, Quality, and other good pacers Brown Tap and Credit Balance were the early leaders in the second division, with Petite, Mirage. Four Square, and Falaise handy. There was not much change to the straight, where Petite, Credit Balance, and Four Square drew out. Then Mongolian appeared with a good run, and he wore Petite down, winning by a length Four Square was two lengths away, with Queen's Country next. The Grattan Loyal gelding has been a disappointment more '.han once.

The Ashburton Trotting Cup had n good finish, but with a slow pace for the first mile it was no test of merit over two miles. King's Play and Bonny Azure brake at the start. Gallant Knight went on from Ironside and Plutus. but after half a mile King's Play moved up, joining Gallant Knight a furlong further on. and leading out of the straight. He was out clear at the half-mile post, Bonny Azure, Gallant Knight, and Ironside being next, with the others close up. King's Play and Bonny Azure led Gallant Knight and Ironside to the home turn, with Plutus and LucKy Jack heading the others. Once in the straight the field closed up. Ironside stayed on well, beating PlulUs by a neck, with King's Play another neck away, just in front of Lucky Jack, while Parisienne was next. Indianapolis disappointed and apparently has had his day. Ironside showed up well in the final struggle. Palomar. Panquitch. and Ace High went oft badly in the McLean Handicap. Jesse Owens soon took charge from Llewellyn's Pet, Hidden Charm Cruiser, and Kilrea, with Wee Potts. Quest, and Glenastle handy. After two furlongs there was not much cnange to the home turn. Quest then moved up, and, taking charge when the straight was reached, stalled off a challenge from Wee Potts by two lengths. Jesse Owens hung on to get third, while Cruiser and Glenastle headed the others. Quest was always going well, and he will reach a better class

The New Zealand Champion Stakes saw thp defeat of Aldershot, a hot favourite. He tangled in the first halffurlong when going up fast to take the lead, After making up his ground quickly he seemed to be in front a furlong from home, but the effort settled him. Nelson Eddy and Taiki tangled at the start, but Nelson Eddy was soon in charge, Shadow Son joining him after two furlongs, with Pension and Centaurus next. Revision took charge at the seven-furlong post, and a little further on Aldershot joined Shadow Son in second place, Taiki and Coquette being next. Revision and Aldershot were in trouble a furlong from the post, where Nelson Eddy took charge, stalling off Coquette by two lengths. Aldershot Was two lengths away, beating Wainoni Girl by a. neck. Nelson Eddy \ had won previously this season 'both at Addington and New Brighton. He looks like making a solid stayer. Shadow Son stopped badly, and Bedrock, having her first race since she won the Sapling Stakes in June, never got near the front. Aldershot looked very unlucky.

Pilot Peter broke at the start of the Winslow Handicap, in, which Guy Hugo was in front all the way. Royal Romance, Little Reta, Bittersweet, and Ganton followed him early, while at the end of half a mile Golden Eagle, Lament, and Peggotty also joined in. Royal Romance nroke half a mile from, home, while Peggotty tangled badly when she appeared to be going well into the straight. Little Reta challenged the leader over the final furlong, but broke near the post, leaving Guy Hugo to beat her by two lengths. Lament stayed on the best of the others, beating Ganton and Bittersweet for third place. Captain Bolt and Sea Gift went badly. Guy Hugo won at New Brighton a few weeks ago. and is an improved trotter.

laurene wood was the early leader in the Midsummer Handicap, with Credit Funds and Labourman next, but after half a mile Credit Funds had taken charge from Ivy Peterson, with Laurene Wood, Labourman and Moana Tama leading the .others. Ivy Peterson retired six furlongs from home, where Jackaranda moved up fast, taking the lead a furlong fur» ther on, with Labourman and Credit Funds next. These thro had the finish to themselves. Jackaranda staying on well to beat Labourman, though both were very tired. Credit Funds was four lengths away, with Laurene Wood and Moana Tama next. The winner is a four-year-old who mav go on. to the good class. Bonny Azure and Glenrossie went off at a tangle in the Boxing Day Handicap. Big Author led War Buoy and Pot Luck out of the straight, but at the mile post Bonnv Azure was alongside the leader. There was no change to the straight. Lucky Jack and Parisienne bein<? next, with Plutus starting to move up from the back. Pot Luck took charge a little further on, but Parisienne. coming with a great | run, got ud on the post to beat him by a head. Lucky Jack was two lengths awav. then Plutus. The winner again showed that she is a great sprinter. MANAWATU MEETING WILD CHASE WINS THE CUP SPRINT TO BLACK THREAD <Peb United Precs Association) PALMERSTON N., Dec. 24. Wild Chase revealed his best form to win the Manawatu Cup in decisive fashion. He was always well placed on the outside of the favourite, Peerless, about six or eight horses back, and he madt his run from the halfmile. He gathered the leaders soon after entering the straight, and although several challenges were thrown out, he held his own, and won solidly. Peerless had to delay her run till a little later, and although she came through in likely style about a furlong from home, she began to roll, and she interfered badly with several horses in turn as she passed. They included Play On, Brazen King, The Bigot, and Happy Landing. The latter pair seemed to suffer most, though they all got it. Brazen King had always been prominent up to then, and it is likely that he was weakening, but The Bigot was going well, and Happy Landing also was coming strongly after being right at the rcai of the field in all the early running. Considering all the circumstances, Happy Landing put up a fine effort, and both he and The Bigot were still hot on the trail of the place-getters at the post. Wild Chase, however, put up a class performance, and thoroughly deserved his success. Argentic ran a fine race to get his third placing. ' finishing strongly. It transpired at an inquiry that Peerless had struck herself, and this was the cause of her rolling in. The previous form of the stable horses Wild Chase and Great Flight led the public to anticipate a forward showing by Counterblast in the sprint event. She drew the outside of the field, and although she ran up prominently on the turn, she never flattered her supporters. The race was won in hollow style by .Black Thread. He hopped to the front very smartly, and was always going too well for any of his opponents, winning comfortably in fast time for tre state of the going. Russian Ballet surprised by running second, but she was finishing well. They all had every chance to beat the winner except Rakahanga, who got chopped out just after the start and lost ground. The Grand Stand Handicap was won solidly by Night Hawk, who has a reputation of being a bit moody. There was nothing wrong with him on this occasion, and when brought along for his run he had to be very solid to gel up. Gay Chou would have been harder to beat but for hanging out, and peculiarly enough, his first challenger. Jazz Boy. followed him off the track al. ; o, but for which she would probably have scraped home. The favourite* Lady Montana, was never dangerous. Old Surrey, who had made most of the running in the Manawatu Cup, was held in behind Lucullus Lad and The Bigot in the Louisson Memorial Handicap, and coming through in the straight he won handily from Hunting Cat and Tidewaiter, who both came strongly from rearward positions. Lucullus Lad and The Bigot both failed to run on. The Bigot pulled very hard in the first six furlongs. Lady Montana was handy throughout, but did not threaten danger. Ned Cuttle ran like an improver. Jazz Boy, who was bracketed with Hunting Cat, was with the winner all the way to the home turn, where he broke a hind fetlock and after struggling on to the winning post he was destroyed. The open seven-furlongs event saw a thrilling finish between the two topweights, Majority and Oratory. The latter, as usual, was one of the pacemakers and after Dungarvan had actually led her into the straight she ran on again and took sole charge. Majority came solidly at her, but the mare fought on and Majority could not head her, sharing the honours. Silver River, who ran up fast on the home turn, was a fair third, and Royal Star II made up ground to finish fourth Alunga was always well back. Dungarvan stopped very quickly once heads were turned for home. THE FIELDS FOR TO-DAY (Special to Daily Times; PALMERSTON N., Dec. 26.
