OFFICIAL FORECAST TEMPORARY IMPROVEMENT The following is the official weather forecast:— . The last of the recent depressions has moved off the Dominion, and pressure is now rising generally with the advance of an anti-cyclone, which was centred yesterday off the coast ot New South Wales. Pressure has fallen again, however, in Tasmania. Indications are for:— Winds—Moderate to strong but decreasing southerly winds turning gradually to west or north-west about and south of Cook Strait, and later freshening again in the far south. Seas.—New Zealand waters: Rough south of East Cape and north of Cape Egmont. but decreasing and otherwise slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate southerly winds turning to westerly in the southern portion and to south-easterly in the northern: seas slight to moderate. Weather. Occasional showers along the east coast south of East Cape, but improving, and weather probably fair to fine and warmer generally. Cloud increasing later, however, in the western and southern portions of the South Island. WEATHER IN DUNEDIN Weather conditions during Christmas week-end remained unsettled and changeable. The sun failed to make an appearance on Saturday, when grey skies were accompanied by a light to fresh south-westerly wind. Towards evening light rain commenced, and later there were some fairly heavy showers. The maximum temperature was 63deg, and the barometer fell seven points. Intermittent rain on Sunday morning was followed by an improvement in overhead conditions in the afternoon. The total sunshine recorded for the day fell short of five hours by a few minutes. Temperatures remained on a level with the previous day, and by midnight the barometer had risen seven points. ' . Early-morning risers on Boxing Day had their spirits dampened by the sight of rain. Conditions improved later, however, and the sun ( shone almost without interruption during the entire afternoon. A strong swirling south-west wind was disagreeable for people out of doors. At 8 a.m. the barometer reading was 29.70 in, but rose throughout the day to 30.11 in at midnight.

Saturday was cloudy and fine, with a moderate wind from the south-west and rain at night. The wind veered from the north-west to the west on Sunday, and there were heavy showers in the morning. The afternoon was fine. The wind again varied from north-west to west to-day, blowing at times from fresh to strong and squally, and showers were experienced during the day. The maximum temperature was 70deg. and the barometric pressure rose to 29.74 in.

WELLINGTON, Dec. 26. Saturday was sunny in the morning, but rain set in about 5 p.m., and continued till 3 a.m. on Christmas Day. Though the weather was threatening at times on Sunday, there were intervals of sunshine, and no ram fell till 9 p.m. A strong and gusty north-west wind prevailed, and changed to a fresh southerly early this morning, the weather continuing cold and showery. Conditions improved during the day, and the afternoon was pleasant. The minimum temperatures on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights were 44.1 deg, 51.2 deg, and 46.1 deg respectively. The maximum temperatures were 61.5 deg, 65deg, and 58.2 deg respectively. At 3.30 p.m. to-day the temperature was 57.7 deg, and the barometer reading was 29.693 in. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 26. After a frost of 4.2 deg, Saturday was fine, but overcast, with a smattering of rain in the evening. A strong easterly wind prevailed, and the maximum temperature was 62.4 deg. Yesterday was fine and sunny in the early morning, but gradually clouded, and rain fell in the afternoon and evening. A fresh south-west wind prevailed, and the maximum temperature was 66.8 deg. To-day a strong south-west wind prevailed, and the temperature was low, the maximum being 52deg. There were frequent heavy showers in the morning, but the afternoon was fine and fairlv clear.
