A PAINFUL JOURNEY

WOMAN'S FALL OVER GLIFF SEVERE INJURIES SUFFERED (Per United Press Association), AUCKLAND, Dec. ffi After an unsuccessful effort had been made to enlist the aid of air transport, a long and at times difficult journey by launch and ambulance was faced by a young woman who suffered severe injuries as the result of a fall from a cliff at Kawau Island on Saturday. The victim was Miss Velma Hyde, a domestic, employed at the Mansion House. During the afternoon Miss Hyde was walking with a friend along the edge of the cliff above several of the bays beyond Mansion Hot'33 Bay, when she missed her footing and fell 30 feet on to the rocks below, suffering head injuries, concussion, and a fracture of the left arm. She was taken to the Mansion House, where her injuries were treated by a nurse who was spending a holiday at Kawau. •'" As hospital treatment was essential, the oossibility of obtaining'a seaplane from the Hobsonville.'Air Base to take Miss Hyde to Auckland was investigated, but it .was not found practicable to send a machine at the time, and arrangements were made for transport by the overhand route through Warkworth. -The injured woman was placed on board a cruising launch and taken to a sandspit on the mainland. There, she was transferred to an ambulance which had made a rapid trio from Auckland. Miss Hyde's condition improved over the week-end, but it was stated by the hospital authorities to-day to be still serious. • .v
