Mr T. O'Shea left by the through express yesterday for Wellington.
Mr W. H. Carson left yesterday morning on a holiday visit to Australia.
Mr L. H. Young, who is paying a visit to Sydney, was a passenger for the north by the through express yesterday.
Mr C. G. Scrimgeour has resigned his commission as a chaplain of the New Zealand Military Forces, according to a Gazette notice (states a Press Association message from Wellington. Messrs James Begg and A. S. Holms (Waimahaka), who have been attending a meeting of the Meat Board m Wellington, were passengers by the through express from the north yesterday.
Northbound passengers by Union Airways yesterday morning were Messrs C. H. Kelley and R. E. Milnesfor Christchurch and Messrs C. G. Prevost and J. D. Haigh for Wellington. Southbound passengers by this afternoon plane were Mrs H. Thomas from Wellington. Mr P. M. Clark from Nelson, and Miss C. Inder and Mr U Ferguson from Christchurch. A Press Association telegram from Auckland says that the funeral of Mr Selwyn Averill, son of Archbishoo Averill, was largely attended yesterday by representatives of the clergy, the legal profession, local bodies, and citizens. Christ's College Chns:church. of which Mr Averill was a former student, was represented by Mi J V Tyree, president, and members of the Old Boys' Club, Auckland.. The chief mourners were Archbishop Averill and Mrs Averill, Canon Averill. Dr Leslie Averill, the Rev. L. E. Cartridge and Mrs Cartridge. The Very Rev. Archimandrite Antonious Mobayed, who-has charge of the St. Nicholas Syrian Orthodox Church, Melbourne, arrived in Dunedin yesterday to conduct Christmas services at the only church of the Order in the Dominion, St. Michaels, Musselburgh. During the Rev. Antonious Mobayed's stay in Dunedin he will officiate at the first Syrian marriage celebrated in this city for 21 years. After his departure from Dunedin he will visit the other main centres, meeting members of the church and enlisting their co-operation In securing buildings for worship.
A presentation was made last evening by members of the staff of Smitn and Smith, Ltd., to Mr W. Lindsay, who will retire on superannuation at the end of the week. The presentation, took the form of a suitably inscribed case of pipes, a tobacco pouch, hair brushes and a walking stick. Making the presentation, Mr Oram referred to Mr Lindsay's loyal service over 54 years. Mr Lindsay, by hard work, had caught the eye of the founder the late Mr Robert F. Smith, and when the business was formed, into a company in 1904 Mr Lindsay was given a Mat on the board, a position which he still held. The directors, as a mark of their regard and appreciation of the faithful service given by Mr Lindsay, supplemented the staff's gift with a substantial cheque. Mr Lindsay made a suitable reply.
