BASEBALL
PROGRESS IN DUNEDIN (Contributed) Baseball in Dunedin is not growing as fast at it is in the northern centres, but it will, not be long before Dunedin will have as many teams as there are in Auckland. Young men of about 19 to 22 years appear to be the keenest supporters, and there are several promising young players in Dunedm. Considering the short time the three girl teams have been playing their improvement has been remarkable. At the Otago Centre's recent meeting Mr C. J. L. White, the president of the 0.8.8. L., said that he would be visiting the North Island soon, and while there would see the presidentof the New Zealand Baseball Centre, Mr A. Jenkins, in regard to the suggested tour by an American softball team to play a series of games in New Zealand during the 1940 centennial period. While in the north Mr White would see several leading teams in action. New teams which have been formed during the past two weeks are the Y.W.C.A., the R.N.V.R.. and two teams from the territorials. They will be seen in action on Saturday afternoon at Bathgate Park, where they will be matched with a team made up mostly of Mormons. These latter players are on a visit from the North Island, where they hold an unbroken record for wins. The Hillside Workshops players held their annual meeting in the social hall this week, there being a good attendance. . Most of last year's officers avere re-elected. A motion was carried to hold a Baseball Club dance later in the season in order to raise funds to help establish the club in Dunedin.
