Globe Derby Walla Walla, Lawn Derby, Logan Derby, and Icevus show that the Glob? Derby line is one of more than ordinary merit. At Ashburton The Ashburton Trotting Club's Boxing Day programme is in circulation and has prize-money amounting to £3IOO. One Representative Nervie's Last is the only New Zealand horse entered for the championship meeting to be held at Launceston. - ; . Accommodation The question of accommodation for horses engaged at Forbury Park meetings is, according to an owner, one that should occupy the attention of the club. A Trophy Mrs McCormack sends word that her contribution to the Winton Trotting Club's programme will be the usual stop watch and not a trophy valued at £25. Sure Potts The winner of the Melrose Trot, Sure Potts, was got by Jack Potts from Wild Child, by Wildwood Junior—Lady Child, by Rothschild—Ptarmigan, by Young Irvington. Renown's Best Renown's Best did not appear to be anything like fully extended when she went 4.17 3-5 at Addington, but the best she could do at Forbury Park was 4.21. She showed a tendency to mix her gait. Plenty of People Apart from all other considerations, the vast crowds at Forbury Park last week proved that there are plenty of people about who wish to see something interesting in the way of light harness racing. Palomar Palomar, who won at Ashburton, was got by Grattan Loyal from Childwood, the dam of Great Logan 2.9 1-5. Childwood was got by Woodchild from Jessie 8., by the thoroughbred Smith O'Brien, from the grand-dam of Prince Imperial.
Good Going The Forbury Park track supplied good footing last week, but the atmospheric conditions were not always favourable to fast time. Still, Fine Art, Logan Derby, and Fremont created fresh records for the track. About Equal
This year the Oamaru Trotting Club's turnover amounted to £28,582, as against £30,347 last year. At Forbury Park on Saturday £29,149 10s
went through the totalisator, so that the excellent date of Labour Day is only about on a par with a Saturday in Dunedin. King Potts The Jack Potts gelding King Potts, who got amongst the winners at Forbury Park, was produced by Molly Desborough. by Desborough— Molly McKinney, by Young McKinney— Seacliff, by Brooklyn. Desborough was got by Logan Pointer—Lily F., by Franz—Lily H., by Huon. Brooklyn was got by Blackwood Abdallah— Watlass. bv Berlin. Improvements There is not much doubt that the reconditioning of the track at Forbury Park has improved the going, and this, in addition to a slowish class, enabled winners to step well inside their handicap mark. The following table shows the improvements made during the meeting:— One Mile Im-
The Greyhound Visit The proposed visit of Greyhound :o New Zealand has not aroused much enthusiasm in some quarters I he: attitude taken up by the Auckland Trotting Club does nothing to help the project, and it is unlikely (saysi theiPress) that any assistance will be coming from Forbury Park or Wellington. This would mean that the Metropolitan Trotting Club would have to shoulder the expense of perhaps £7OOO, even it the Citizens' Committee does attain its object in raising £SOOO. This is thought to be too big a financial hurdle for the Metropolitan Club to attempt, for after a long journey and change of climate there is no assurance that Greyhound would be in condition to give his best display of trotting. There is still a possibility that the unhoppled pacer Billy Direct may come to New Zealand, for although pacers are not, so much in favour as trotters in America, to New Zealand patrons there would be little difference. Billy Direct has paced a mile in lmin 55sec, and is the world's champion pacer. Greyhounds trotting record is lmin 55£sec. There is a feeling amongst members, of the Owners and Breeders' Association that much good could be done with £SOOO if subscribed by the citizens of Christchurch, and one member suggested that free-for-all racing between the champions of Australia and New Zealand would produce as much interest as a visit from Greyhound or any American horse. Another series of races as arranged during the visit of Walla Walla to New Zealand, it is thdught. would provide stirring racing, and with Lawn Derby and Logan Derby representing Australia against Indianapolis, Lucky Jack, Parisienne, and perhaps two others from the Dominion, the contest would be the best witnessed for a long time. Free-for-all racing has not received the right encouragement, and one prominent member of the Owners and Breeders Association has expressed the view that at every meeting a free-for-all should be run, and that no penalty should be attached to the winning, of such a race. The consensus of opinion is that the visit of Greyhound or Billy Direct to New Zealand would create the greatest interest for perhaps one or two days' racing, but generally would have no lasting effect on the sport, and certainly would do little to improve the class of racing.
