No. 4 DISTRICT AUTHORITY
APPLICATIONS CONSIDERED A sitting of the No. 4 District Transport Licensing Authority was held yesterday, when a number of applications were considered. Mr V. Raines presided. Licences Amended R. J. Pennell (Waitahuna) applied for an amendment to his licence to enable him to carry cream, mails, and parcels over the route WaitahunaMount Stuart, in addition to his present services.—No objection was made, and the application was granted. J. D. Lockett (Maclennan) and R. J 3. Findlater (Papatowai) sought amendments to their licences. The deletion from Lockett's licence of the route Waipiata-Owaka and the insertion in Findlater's licence of a clause to enable him to carry stock between Chaslands and Owaka were granted, no objections being received. Hughes Transport, Ltd. (Patearoa) applied to have its licence amended to include the counties of Waitaki and Westland via the Haast and Lindis Passes, and to have the licence extended to cover the Maniototo County, and to add to the schedule of the licence to enable the applicant to undertake contracting work.—There was no objection, and the application was granted. ' ' . ) There was no objection to an application by A. S. McConnachie for an amendment to his licence to enable him to carry milk for a firm from Otokia to Dunedin, and the application was granted. .
An application from the Alexandra Carrying Company, Ltd., for its licence to be amended to include work on the Haast Pass road and two local bodies was objected to by Hughes Transport. Ltd. (Mr R. S. M. Sinclair), unless it could be proved that such a licence was necessary.—The authority, in granting a temporary licence until May 31, said there was a contract in hand, and a further application could be made later-if there was sufficient work. , _ . T .. Somerville's Transport Service, Ltd. (Balclutha), for whom Mr J. B.Thomson appeared, was granted an extension to its licence to carry fat lambs to Burnside —lt also applied for permission to carry stock to shows and to sales, objections to these amendments being received by the Railways Department and the Clutha .Carrying Company (Mr C. J. L. White).—TaC former amendment was granted, but decision was reserved in the matter of carrying stock to sales. J. M. Tosh. Ltd. (Balclutha) was granted an amendment to enable the company to carry fat lambs to Burnside.—Decision was reserved concerning an application to carry stock to safes. Mr J. B. Thomson appeared for the applicant, and an objection was lodged by the Clutha Carrying Company (Mr C. J. L. White). The Bruce Carrying Company, Ltd. (Milton), was granted an mcrease in area to include the Vincent, Tuapeka, and Clutha Counties for road contracting work. The authority reserved his decision concerning the company s application for an extension of licence to permit the carrying of general goods in the Clutha County.. The Railways Department, A. R. Leonard and Sort, carriers (Balclutha). and the Clutha Carrying Company all objected to the extension. Licence Revoked When the licence of W. A. Hoban (Roxburgh) came up for review the authority stated that Hoban had been warned, and had taken no steps to place the matter before him. and the licence was revoked. Licences Granted C. V. Christie, of Hyde (Mr J. P. Ward), applied for a goods licence covering the Hyde Riding in the Maniototo County, and the Macraes Riding in the Waihemo County, in order to enable him to carry sand to the railway and to carry out certain gravelling work in both ridings—No objection was raised, and the application was granted. On behalf of the Minister of Railways, Mr A. Clark applied for a passenger service licence extension to include Carey's Bay and Aramoana, .ill the Dunedin-Port Chalmers route.—No objection was raised, and the licence was granted. Passenger Licences The application of Tuapeka Motors, Ltd.. for a licence to carry parties on contract trips within a radius of 40 miles was granted, there being no opposition. "Land Cruises" A seasonal licence was applied for by White Star Taxis, Ltd., to enable them to carry out " land cruises." Mr H. M. Mackay, who supported the application, said that the route was from Dunedin, through the Catlins district to Invercargill, Manapouri, Eglinton Valley, Queenstown, Pembroke, and back to Dunedin. —The application was opposed by the Railways Department on the grounds that the service had substantially the same terminal points and route as the railway passenger service.—After hearing lengthy evidence, Mr Raines reserved his decision. Extension Sought An application was made by Messrs Crust and Crust, Ltd. (Mr E. J. Anderson) for an amendment to their licence in order to enable them to extend the scone of activities to carry electrical equipment, poles and machinery in Otago province and general goods one way in conjunction with household removals in the South Island.—An objection was raised by the Railways De-
partment on the ground that the goods could be handled by nil.—The • au." thority reserved his decision.
