HIT BY FALLING TREE

BOY FATALLY INJURED ELDERLY MAN IN CRITICAL CONDITION (Special ro Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 28. Herbert George Bailey, aged 14 years, the younger son of Mr and Mrs G. Bailey, of West Eyreton, was fatally injured, and Robert Hutchison, aged 58 years, was critically injured, when a large wattle tree fell on them on the farm of Mr D. Chapman, of West Eyreton, about 3.45 p.m. to-day. Hutchison and the boy, who were employed on the farm, were walking together near the tree when, without any warning it fell on them, causing severe internal injuries to both. There was no wind at the time, and it is believed that the tree, which had grown with a lean, had fallen because cf its own weight. To-day's heavy rain had softened the ground about the roots, which were torn away when the tree fell. The injured persons were taken to the Christchurch Hospital where Bailey died at 8.45 p.m. Late tonight Hutchison's condition was unchanged.
