L. Dodd will leave this week-end for Wellington to attend the Dominion Council of the League of Mothers. * * •" Dr and Mrs J. B. Dawson will leave during the week-end for Bluff to meet their daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs A. P. Ewens, who are arriving from Adelaide on a Visit to Dunedin. * * * Mrs Leslie Wilson and Mrs Erlton Wilson were "at home" on Thursday afternoon at the former's home in Albert street, where the reception rooms were effectively decorated with tulips and irises. Mrs Leslie Wilson wore a smart gown of black and white patterned si'lk and a colourful posy. The guests, who numbered about 60, were chiefly the young friends of Mrs Erlton Wilson, whose frock of royal blue pinspot sheer had a spray of lily of the valley at the neckline. * * * Mrs Erlton Wilson gave-, a luncheon party yesterday at her home in Royal terrace, the guest of honour being Miss Diana Fitchett, whose marriage will take place in December. The other guests included Mesdames D. G. BuSh (Parnassus), Forsyth Barr. John Edmond, and Misses Jean Abraham. Joan Ritchie, Ailsa Lawson, Winna Johnstone, and Lorraine Orbell. * * ' # The closing meeting for the year ol the St. Clair branch of the League of Mothers took the form of a '•Mothers and daughters'" evening, Mrs E. M. Doig presiding over a large attendance. Visitors were present from the Maori Hill, Roslyn, and Mornington branches. Two amusing competitions were won by Mrs M. Robson and Miss Peggy Lennox. Recitations by Mrs F. L. Lawrence and Miss J. Wilson, songs by Miss Wilson and Miss Tyrell (both accompanied by Mrs E. Drake), two items by the choir, and an original play entitled "The Breaking Point,' presented by members of the branch, constituted an enjoyable programme. ¥ * * The Mornington branch ol the League of Mothers held its eighth annual social on Wednesday last. Mrs Wallace (president) presided over a large attendance. Visitors included members of the St. Mary's Mothers' Union—Roslyn, St. Clair, and Maori Hill branches. The evening was spent in singing, games, and a competition. Items were contributed by the choir, solos by Mesdames Mackay, Greenfield, and Stenhouse, and an amusing debate by several members. The birthday cake, which was donated by a member, was cut by Mesdames Birrell and Mclndoe. A lar»e number of toys werp bought by members for the children's ward in the Public Hospital. Bouquets were presented to Mesdames Mclndoe. Paterson. Hand, and Greenfield. If the cotton has got into a muddle on the sewing machine bobbin and refuses to unwind, hold a lighted match under it and then clear away the loose burnt cotton..
