NEW ZEALAND CUP MEETING

FIRST DAY AT RICCARTON

SLY FOX AMONG FAVOURITES

COUNTERBLAST IN STEWARDS

There's many a good Cup story, ■ A pleasure to relate, But let's cut the cackle— Whtt'll win the one of 'B7 Delving into the records of the past m not always a guide to the future, because a horse mat could win last year with 9st may not be able to gain a place to-day. The strength of the field may vary, and does vary from year to year. This year the handicapper had to bestow a little flattery on Argentic to make the regulation top-weight. In racing, a proof oi stamina is required, and not the guesswork that a trial over a mile and a-quarter supplies a satisfactory line as to how a horse will stay tmo miles. They still gallop a horse over the distance in England, and they can really train horses and make them the best in the world. Many will no doubt confine their attention to the proved stayers in the New Zealand Cup, and search for the winner amongst Argentic, Willie Win, Wotan, The Buzzer, Malagigi, and Sly Fox. Arctic King has won over a mite and a-half, but now has an extra 14ilb to carry, and there is no doubt that he was lucky to beat Studley Royal in the Great Autumn Handicap. Argentic has been improving during the season, but age is a handicap. Willie Win, according to those who saw him run at Flemington, was unlucky to miss the Melbourne Cup. When seen at Wellington he looked particularly well, although probably short of a race or a couple of good rousing gallops over a fair amount of ground. Wotan has done practically nothing since winning the Melbourne Cup, but a return to form wouUI make him particularly dangerous with 81b above what he successfully carried at Flemington, The field at Riccarton does not appear 10 strong as the opposition usually encountered in a Melbourne Cup. The Buzzer bore an attractive appearance at Wellington and he locked ready to repeat his Auckland Cup form. He has an extra 111 bto carry and meets Argentic (about half a length away) on 81b worse terms. Malagigi has two wins over a mile and a-half and may be hard to beat. Sly Fox works out well on paper and Tidewaiter and Milford cannot be overlooked. Padishah has 111 b more than what he carried in the Wellington Handicap, and when the position is summed up the public will probably go for Sly Fox, The Buzzer. Willie Win. or Malagigi to fill the places. The Brush Hurdles Iddo, who is top weight in the Spring Brush Hurdles, started 23 times last season and won five times and was seven times placed. He won on the flat and over hurdles and after aii indifferent race on the first day at the Wellington spring meeting won on the second day with 11.4 with Silver Sight 11.3, who won on the first day, unplaced. At Riccarton Silver Sight meets him on 81b better terms over an extra quarter of a mile. Pango, who finished third, won on the third day with 10.6. with Sunee 9.18 a close third. Top Rank won the Trial Hurdles with 9.3 i from Padishah 11.6 and the unplaced lot included Mount Val 9.2}. who fell. Top Rank afterwards won on both days of the Geraldine meeting and in his last start was unplaced on the flat at Rangiora.. Flashlight was second to Sunward in the Enfield Steeplechase and fell when in the field for the Beaufort Steeplechase. Last season Flashlight started seven times and finished with three consecutive wins. He won oyer fences at Timaru, Ashburton and Wellington, and gave promise of doing better. Flashlight will be one of the fancied lot. Sunee ran a fair race on the third day at Wellington. . Superex scored his last win in a high-weight handicap at Oamaru, and Redolent, if he has come back to rating shape, may prove the best of the lightweights. Flashlight; Silver Sight and Sunee or Iddo mav be in demand. Spring Plate Disdain will start favourite for the Spring Plate and may experience most opposition from Beaupartir and Gay Parade.

Linwood Handicap The Linwood Handicap should be a good betting race, as several in the field will come in for support. These include Foxlove, Sparkle, Auctor. Lady Chat. Lord Cavendish, Rebellion and Great Flight. Foxlove. Auctor Lady Chat, Lord Cavendish, Rebellion and Great Flight have won in good style this season, and others such as Trebor have good form in a place to their credit. . D _ The popular selections may be Kebellion, Great Flight. Lord Cavendish or Straightdel. The New Zealand Cup If form this season can be accepted at its face value then Sly box is a logical favourite for the New Zealand Cup but whilst he has been displaying winning form it is quite obvious that others nave not been keen on incurring the risk of a penalty. Hence to a great extent the form displayed this season has to be ignored. It would not be wise to accep' form up to date as absolutely correct, as horses set to be At and cleaned up for the New Zealand Cup would not reasonably be expected to be really fit and well a month or more before their chief engagement. That why the writer has always been hostile to the penalty conditions attached to the New Zealand Cup. As a

matter of fact, horses fit and well are being penalised for wins when on direct or collateral form others are not, to say the least. Some horses may be doing their best, but the fact remains that they deliberately may not be ready to do their best, and hence winners should not be penalised. Only a dunce in racing would, forinstance, accept the result of the Harcourt Stakes as a true guide to form. Accepting things as they are may not be a too reliable guide, but if, the book of form speaks correctly then Sly Fox is entitled to start favourite for the New Zealand Cup. He gave Dictate 51b and was finishing on well when he beat him over a mde and aquarter at Trentham. Dictate in turn won well at the Banks Peninsula meet-

ing. Assuming that Sly Fox is 101 b superior to Dictate, and the latter on his form at Banks Peninsula would not have been stopped by .an extra 51b. it would make a handicap read Dictate 8.4, Willie Win 9.0 Argentic 8.13. Padishah 8.6. Malagigi 8.6, and soon. If Sly Fox is 101 b better than Dictate, his Cup weight would be close to 9.0.' On collateral form the figures would then read:— Argentic 9.0. Willie Win 8.12. Sly Fox 8.10 (about), Padishah 8.6. Wotan 8.5, The Buzzer 8.3 and so on, the figures suggesting that Sly Fox has approximately, on paper, the best part of a stone in his favour. This has to be discounted by the fact that some of his opponents have not been seen quite at their best in recent form. It may require a wizard or a thought reader to for ma reliable idea as to what the public thinks with more or less reason or hope, but the fact remains that it appears on the surface that the most dangerous lot are Sly Fox, The Buzzer, Malagigi. or, Willie Win Reducing them to flnafity it may be that the order of favouritism will be Sly Fox, The Buzzer, Willie Win or Malagigi. Welcome Stakes Beaulivre is sure to start at a short price for the Welcome Stakes. Master Hotspur got unbalanced in the Wellesley Stakes after getting cut out at the start and may run up to his John Grigg Stakes form. He has been galloped in company instead of travelling on the bit as prior to the Wellington meeting. The change should teach him to hit out with less risk of setting unplaced. The best was not seen of Winning Rival at Trentham. and she may prove a lot more formidable at Riccarton. Dark Flight may prove the most successful of the others engaged. Beaulivre, Master Hotspur and Dark Flight will be the order of favouritism, and Winning Rival regarded as next best.

The Apprentices'- Handicap Such races as the Apprentices' Handicap are not usually regarded as a betting proposition. A good line to follow is to go for a horse that is a keen galloper and so in a sense run his own race. Auctor earned an apprentice home a winner at Wingatui and others fancied may be Nereus Lady Middleton or Scuffle. The Stewards' Handicap When a field extends beyond half a dozen in a six-furlong race at Riccarton. then the draw for position becomes a matter of serious consideration. If those near the rails can hold their position they must inevitably carry the outside lot wide as they turn for home. This must obviously accentuate the handicap of the outside lot at the barrier. Still, all things being equal, those most likely to attract the judge's attention are Counterblast, Paper Slipper Gay Chou, Kinnoull, Gay Son and Alunga. Triune under favourable conditions may be the best outsider, but at the present time Counterblast, Paper Slipper and Gay Chou may ■ be selected as most likely to fill the places. It is a field suggesting that the draw for position should be published in connection with the acceptances.

The Rlccarton Handicap Wild Chase was unlucky at Wellington, but It has the redeeming feature of a probable improvement in racing condition. Sovereign Lady is a good mare, ana, if the reported lameness, developed a couple of days ago, is not too deepseated. she will be in strong demand Lady Montana and Waitaka are both sure to shape well, but Nightwings may be preferred to them. Dunstan may prove the best of the light-weights, or in his absence Happy Night would come into favour. They may support Wild Chase. Sovereign Lady and Nightwings, with Waitaka next best if Sovereign Lady drops out. The fields are as follows: 12.2SPRING BRUSH HURDLE HANDICAP, Of £3OO. One mile and three-quarters

A NORTHERN OPINION CUP AN OPEN RACE <Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 4. There are some notable features in this year's New Zealand Cup field. In the first place there are 18 acceptors, a number equalled only once, when Sasanof won in 1918, and exceeded only when Downfall beat 20 opponents in 1908. The presence of Wotan is another point of interest. He will be the third Melbourne Cup winner to contest

the local race, and it is of interest to recall that the other two, Sasanof and Nightmarch, both completed a great double by winning at Riccarton Five out of the last six races have been won by mares, but the record will not bp improved this year, as there is not a mare in the field. With all this staying form there remains great divergence of opinion concerning the probable result. A surprising feature is that Argentic, Willie Win, Padishan, Wotan, and The Buzzer, the five topweights, have not won any of their spring engagements, though Padishah showed his class as a jumper by taking the Grand National Hurdles in August. The recent form of this lot has been very mixed. Some of them have done very little racing and others have had a few of their runs over short courses It is unusual to find a record like this from the horses rated as the best in the field, and it complicates the situation for those in search of the winner as they have to go back to last season for form to warrant support. It is many years since the issue m the Cup appeared so open at this late stage. The race has produced its surprises, but as a rule it has been easy enough to name the favourite On this occasion, however, opinions vary so much that there is little to choose between four or five of the candidates, while the connections of several others profess considerable confidence about the result. Sly Fox, Malagigi, Padishah, The Buzzer, and Tidewaiter ap pear to be most in favour, but Arctic King and Wotan have come into discussions during the last few days, arid so has Willie Win, who pleased in the last two gallops. It is hard to recall a year when there was so much good staying form in a New Zealand Cup field. Two of the horses have won over two miles—Wotan the Melbourne Cup, and The Buzzer the Auckland Cup. Willie Win has a second in the Melbourne Cup, while Argentic has been placed in the New Zealand and Auckland Cups. Argentic, Willie Win. Padishah. Arctic King, and Malagigi have all won important races over a mile and a-half. As a contrast to the Cup, the sprint race, the Stewards' Handicap, is popularly regarded as at the mercy of Paper Slipper or Counterblast, who will form a great bracket for the Clifford stable. Counterblast became favourite after her Trentham success, but when sprinted early this week her mate, Paper Slipper, had no difficulty in holding her off in very fast time. Paper Slipper lost form last autumn, but after a spell he has come back apparently as good as ever. There is nodoubt about his being brilliant and he looks a tough prospect, as he has come down in the weights as a result of a number of defeats. The bracket may fail, but without question on the brilliant track work of both candidates it is entitled to be a strong first choice. Gay Chou, Rebel Mate, Gay Son, Alunga, and Lady Leigh are among those that will appeal most ol the others. Great interest will attach to the Spring Plate, in which Disdain will make her first appearance this season. She had her only two races at Easter, winning each with ridiculous ease, and she is regarded as one of the most brilliant gallopers at Riccarton. Her opponents will include Beaupartir twice second at Trentham and regarded in some quarters as likely to trouble Defaulter in the Derby. His clash with Disdain should arouse great interest. Mention of Disdain recalls the fact that when she was bought a few weeks ago by Mr A. Young, of Christchurch, it was decided to leave her with her old trainer, H. R. Davies. till after the clo.se of the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting. Arrangements have now been made for L. G. Morris to train her, and he will take the filly home when he returns to Awanuni after the Ricarton carnival. He trained Red Ranger for Mr Young and did well with him until his racing career was ended by an accident. Beaulivre appears to be the best two-year-old in sitrht at present Master Hotspur and Winning Rival will do better later in the season. Another local juvenile, Mooroti.s. will be having his first race, and will be worth watching in view of future engagements. Other races on the first day will provide a clash of northern and southern form. In every way the prosnects are for good racing, end it should be a very successful meeting, provided the weather holds.

WINGATUI HORSES

ARRIVAL AT RICCARTON L_ (Feb United Hbebs Association! CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 4. Conditions were pleasant for work at Riccarton this morning, but the proceedings were not of much interest The inside of the trial grass track was open, but most of the horses did only useful pacing on the plough. Some of the previous day's arrivals went on the grass, but their tasks were only short sprints, most of them being under restraint.

Alunga, though he was sore yesterday, is all right again. He did useful pace work. The lameness from which Sovereign Lady suffered yesterday was due to a bruised heel. , Apparently it is not serious, as she moved freely in light work.

Silver Streak was out looking well, but no rider has been engaged yet for the Stewards' Handicap. D. Marks arrived yesterday from the north and had Russian Ballet and Scandal doing light exercise. Arrivals from South Canterburv last night included E. J. Ellis with Passaform. Chirp. Toro Koura. Gold Salute, and Neptune. E. Trilford is due this evening from Washdyke with a team including the Stewards' Handicap candidate. Rebel Mate.

T. Hobbs came from Oamarn with Silver Streak and Master Dingle. The Wingatui contingent which arrived vesterday consists of Val=>ntua Our Pal, Moneymore. Nifht Wings Auctor, Norseman. Gay Vixen. Dissemble, Lord Nuffield. Attractive Note and Janet Guvnor. The two We«t Coasters, Landraid and Emmeline GM. nut in an annearance yesterday. Foxlove and Blissful Ladv'also came from Southland vesterday.

RACING NEWS By Sentinel Valarth Valarth has been turned out for a spell at Berwick. It is doubtful whether he will ever be raced again Lady Chat Lady Chal, who is engaged in the Linwood Handicap, carried a good deal of support in her races at the Wellington spring meeting, but got a bad run in each start. Great Flight Great Flight won so well on the second day of the Dunedin spring meeting that he is worthy of note for engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Disdain Disdain was an equine flying machine when racing as a two-year-old last season. She cleared out from the opposition in the Russley Handicap, in which 14 others followed her home. She administered similar treatment to the rest of the field in the Autumn Nursery Handicap, which she won with 8.10 in lmin 14sec. Disdain could have been sold for a big price to Australia but for the suspicion of unsoundness. She cost her present owner 2000 guineas. Rebellion A track watcher at Riccarton stated to the writer that Rebellion was a smarter galloper than Disdain in the early spring of last season. Straightdel Straightdel was responsible for a good gallop with Janet Gaynor last Saturday and the fact draws attention to his chance in the Linwood Handicap It is a fairly strong field with Rebellion, Lord Cavendish, Sparkle, Great Flight and other good gallopers engaged. Straightdel is a lean and light-fleshed gelding, and no one would back him on his looks

Beaupartir The stable regarded Beaupartir as unbeatable at Trentham. Lord Cavendish beat him in the Trial Stakes and Good Passage in the Novice Handicap. To beat something regarded as unbeatable draws attention to Lord Cavendish. - A Good Pair Trebor and Nereus shaped well at Trentham, and may strike winning form at Riccarton. Sunec Sunee's chances over jumps would be improved if more distance had to be travelled at Riccarton. He would have just about won on the third day at Trentham but for a faulty jump at the last hurdle. This cost him two or three lengths, and he was only a little over a length away at the finish. Flashlight Flashlight created a very favourable impression when racing last season. He looks the real type for a jumper, and he scored three comfortable wins on end. Willie Win Willie Win will come into favour for the New Zealand Cup as a result of his gallop on Thursday last. Counterblast With an even break away from the barrier, it will require the top-weights in the Stewards' Handicap to show exceptional merit to give Counterblast about a stone or more. She is a class horse in at a light weight. Auctor Auctor has trained on well this season. He is one of the best-bred horses left by Balboa, who got winners from rather ordinary mares. Smart Two-year-olds It will be interesting to note how Winning Rival and Dark Flight shape at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Winning Rival won at Wingatui in 49 3-ssec after getting sent back three furlongs from home. Dark Flight won comfortably on the second day in 49 l-ssec, and both gallops could be regarded as better than 48sec at Riccarton. Milford Last Refrain was third in the Buchanan Memorial Handicap and finished in front of several New Zealand Cup candidates. At Wingatui, Last Refrain beat Milford by a head in the Mosgiel Handicap, but on the second day the latter won going away. The line Rives Milford a chance of winning at Riccarton. Silver Streak Silver Streak fluked Defaulter in the Electric Handicap at Wingatui, but even so, the former nut up a really good gallop by winning with 9.2 in lmin 14 4-ssec. If he has trained on since then, Silver Streak should shape well at Riccarton. Glenacre Glenacre ran second to Tidewaiter at the Grand National meeting, and was third at the Banks Peninsula meeting. He- won three times last season Lady Leigh Lady Leigh is fancied in some quarters for the Stewards' Handicap. She won the Longbeach Handicap, and was third to Wine Card and Kinnoull at Ashburton. She won at the Banks Peninsula meeting, but on Ashburton form Kinnoull should again finish in front of her. The Masquerader The Masquerader scored a very comfortable win at the Kurow meeting over nine furlongs with 9.12 in lmin 54 3-ssec. He is in the Riccarton Handicap with 331 b less on his back, but against vastly superior company. Last year the Riccarton Handicap was won by Smoke Screen with 9.2 in lmin 5i 4-ssec. The Masquerader should go close to Smoke Screen's time with 331 b less than he carried at Kurow. Light-weights Happy Night and Dunstan are two likely light-weights that should help to carry the field along in the Riccarton Handicap, but the two top-weights, Wild Chase and Sovereign Lady, appear to dominate the situation. In Form Horses that have been shaping well in recent engagements and are in at Riccarton include:—Beaupartir. Lady Rosette. Gay Parade. Rebellion, Lord Cavendish. Auctor, Great Flight. Foxlove, Sly Fox. Milford. Happy Landing. Beaulivre, Counterblast, Gay Son, Gay Chou, Alunga, Triune. Rakahanga. Lady Leigh. Wild Chase, and Nightwings. Triune Although his name is not being mentioned in connection with the Stewards' Handicap Triune will probably beat more than will beat him, provided the conditions favour him. He was second to Majority at Trentham, and last year, it will be remembered, he won the Avon Handicap, run on the third day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, with 8.12 in lmin 12sec. Now a Free Lance P. Spratt has completed his apprenticeship and at the Gore meeting was riding as a free lance. He will pilot Janet Gaynor in the Stewards'. Race Cards Under the new Gaming Act in New South Wales, it is illegal to publish pirate race cards. As a result of the ban, sales of official books have increased by 50 per cent, or more. Shadow King Nothing was heard at this year's Melbourne Cup of Shadow King, who started in the race six times—third in 1930, second 1931, third 1932, second 1933, fourth 1935 and unplaced 1936, Last year he was again on the course, as a policeman's hack. Carnival Week Carnival week festivities will start to-day- -the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's four-day spring meeting at Riccarton. The course is in great order, havin° benefited by a fall oi rain this week. Large fields are made up of horses from all parts of the Dominion. Though Riccarton stables will contribute liberally more than half the competitors scheduled for the first day will be visitors. The New Zealand Cup will be the chief attraction It has been under discussion for several months, and all the early spring meet ings have benefited by the presence of horses with Cup engagements The field of 18 will be drawn from a wide area. Riccarton stables claim five representatives, while there are two from other parts of the South Island, and 11 from various North Island districts

TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel Without a Representative The non-acceptance of Grand Mogul has left Mr G. J Barton without a representative in the Trotting Cup. The only assignment of Indianapolis at the meeting is the Free-for-All. A Useful Team F J. Smith's team for Addlngton, including King's Warrior, Ironside, and Nervie's Last, has arrived at Christchurch, but the trainer has remained behind to drive Van Derby, who will be a hot favourite in the chief evem at Thames to-day. Smith will follow by airliner to-morrow A Good Impression Lawn Derby has made a good impression at Addington. but that, is no more than was to be expected. The Australian crack is set a stiff task in the Cup. not so much in the limit as in the number of horses in front, though this applies in equal measure to Parisienne. Lucky Jack, and Pot Luck. Lawn Derby is usually a reliable, though not fast, beginner, but in his races in Australia he is always a long way behind his opponents and has no disturbing factors to contend with. An unhoppled pacer will not be so well placed in a congested field. m In Australia Recent trotting meetings in various parts of Australia were a triumph for New Zealand-bred horses. At Wayville. South Australia, the chief races were won respectively by Paragon, by Nelson Bingen—Bonalene, and Torquemada, full brother to Indianapolis At Gloucester Park. Perth, two recent New Zealand purchases, Kay Francis and Hearts Aflame, scored their first victories in West Australia. Kay Francis had raced usefully at Greymouth and Reefton. but Hearts Aflame, by

Jack Potts—Ablaze, did not race. She was driven by R. Dixon, who went to Perth in charge- of several New Zealand horses for Mr R. Cooper. At the Echuca and Melbourne Show trots an unraced Auckland novice, Takanini, was successful. By Grattan Loyal from Choice, Takanini was bred by F. Holmes, educated by F J. Smith, and is now in the stable of G. Gath

An Auckland Opinion Auckland-owned horses left in the New Zealand Trotting Cup are King's Warrior, Ironside Parisienne, Kings Play, and Bonny Azure. The lastnamed won o lap prize last year, but her subsequent form was not impressive. Parisienne who will be coupled with Lucky Jack, the last Cup winner will be a stout link in a good combination, and will not occasion a great deal of surprise if Berry's pacers both reach the money. The return to form of King's Play at Oamaru has brought the Tamahere pacer well into the picture and he may give Mr W. Johnstone Ins second success Peter Bingen raced in his colours at his second win, Kohara, who won two years previously for Mr J. L. Webb, is the only other Auckland-owned winner. When attuned. King's Play is a fine horse and a great stayer. Successful Families

Members of the Bryce and Holmet families can claim wonderful record? where the New Zealand Trotting Cup is concerned. J. Bryce, sen., drovo Cathedral Chimes to victory in 1916. and he was behind Ahuriri when the son of Cathedral Chimes won in 1925 and again in 1926 His fourth success came per medium of Red Shadow in 1933. Two of his sons have carried off the honours with horses trained by their father. J. Bryce. jun.. winning with Great Hope in 1923 and A. Bryce with Kohara in 1927. The first success credited to. the Holmes family came in 1919, when F. Holmes piloted Trix Pointer, and two sons have steered winners in the big contest. M. Holmes scoring with Wrackler in 1930 and A Holmes with Harold Logan two years later. A third member of the family. F. G. Holmes, drove Sherwood to victory in the 1921 contest, but lost the race on a protest.
