BOXING CALTAUX v. FOSTER
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —1 am sorry your reporter was disappointed with the main professional bout at the Town Hall last night, because I think that in many respects it was one of the most noteworthy contests ever staged in this city. Now, Foster is a man who, as the vulgar say, carries a sleeping draught in either hand. Most people, after seeing Caltaux take several trips to the canvas in bis first fight with the
Canadian, conceded him very little chance last night, especially as Foster was said to be full of confidence and in the pink of condition. The bullnecked Auckland boxer, however, completely confounded the critics by as clever an exhibition of defensive fighting as I have witnessed in my 40odd summers. After seeing Jenkin's unsuccessful attempts to employ an effective guard against the Canadian's hooking blows, one could fully appreciate the completeness with which Caltaux foiled Foster's attempts to send over "the good-night punch." The solid blows which he landed during the evening could be counted on the fingers .of • one hand, while Caltaux propped Foster off repeatedly with lefts to the head and, in the closing stages, sneaked in some shrewd punches to the midriff. Foster, in the last round, was a sick, sorry and disappointed man with a nasty cut over his right eye, but Caltaux was just getting warmed up. Congratulations to him! There is not another boxer in New Zealand who could have done to Foster what Caltaux did last night,—l am, etc.. Fight Fan. Roslyn, November 3.
